Default seeking OB advice

For insurance reasons, I can't get an OB until after I get pg. My plan covers great and afforable GYN care, but these docs aren't OBs, so I'll have to find someone new once I get that . I can't even schedule an appointment for prenatal care unless I want to pay for it out of pocket.

Here's my question... Since we aren't telling anyone we are TTC, I can't ask friends and colleagues about recommendations for a doc. Do you ladies have any general tips for what to look for in an OB doc? Do you have a male or female? I'm not sure which I'd prefer. Any horror stories or great experiences? I've never had an OB before, so how will I know this is the person I want delivering my baby? Yikes! I'm stressed about this.

Any suggestions you have would be LOTS of help. I'm feeling very lost without being able to go in and meet this person while TTC.

I can see you are in a tough spot and hope you are able to find someone you like. I prefer women doctors, for no other reson than they know what having a period is like and if they have had a child they know what that is like too. A man can never totally understand how we feel or what we are going through.

I would do some research on the doctors you can see, if they are in a private practise you may even be able to find their site, and I would visit a few doctors you like. When it comes to someone taking care of you and your delivery, you have to feel comfortable and you will not get that by just picking a name out of a book.

If push comes to shove, ask one of your girlfriends that mentioned having a good OB. Tell her a lady at work needs a good OB and you rememberd her mentioning speaking highly of hers and thought she could pass the name along. It is a little white lie, but they will find it amusing when you tell them the story.

Good Luck and I hope you get a BFP real soon!!

I don't have an OB yet either, but I also prefer woman doctors. My SIL had a woman and she liked hers. I don't plan to look for one, just yet. Sorry I'm not much help.

Thanks for the advice, Lola. I like your little white lie tactic! You mentioned visiting a few doctors...is it possible to do that without being charged? I would certainly love to just introduce ourselves to a doc and get a feel for him/her, but do they do that? Sorry if I'm being skeptical, but it just seems that docs charge you and arm and a leg for everything.

Sheri, I notice that you are getting along in your 2ww. Are you going to be testing soon? Very exciting! Please keep us updated. and good luck for that .

Hey Sophie. It really think it depends on your insurance. My girlfriend lived in Boston and met with a couple OBs when she moved here to find one she felt comfortable with. She even called from Boston and talked to one of the OBs to just get a feel for her. I think this happens a lot and is excepted, if there is a charge, I would think it would only be a co-pay, which is usually 10 or 20 bucks with is worth it for the piece of mind. HTH and good luck!!!

I probably won't test until Monday. I've already tested 4 times and all !
I sure feel as though is coming. Last month she came 15 dpo and that's where I am today. She hasn't shown yet, but the day is not over.
I'll keep you updated!

Keep your chin up, Sheri. I know the wait is really tough, but you'll make it through. It's probably a good idea to wait to test. Those s are such a huge disappointment. Anyway, I hope AF doesn't show up for you. Have a great weekend and let us know how the testing goes on Monday.

I went to my family dr then my gyno and then my nurse practioner, then finally found an RE on my own (Im in Canada) He is just amazing!!! I dont think it matters too much if it is a man or woman, it needs to be someone caring and understanding... which is what i was lucky to found - someoen who listens to the patients and not the statistics, u know!
Good luck!
