Hello Katie,
I chart my temps as well as cervical fluid and beginning this cycle I'll be charting my cervical position as well. Charting your temps is a really good way to make sure you’re ovulating but the most important factor in TTC (according to Taking Charge Of Your Fertility which is my TTC bible) is your cervical fluid. Because even if you ovulate and your temps reflect that it doesn't mean you have the necessary cervical fluid to keep the sperm alive. Also, by the time your temps show you've ovulated its most likely to late and the egg has died. So I would strongly encourage you to chart your temp, your fluid and your position since having three indicators is better than one.
Also, knowing when to have sex is difficult unless you chart because you won't know when your luteal phase starts (or if it's to short). Most doctors think day 14 is the average time of ovulation but the fact is we're all different and some of us ovulate on day 10 while others might not ovulate until day 18 or even 32. It all depends on how long your cycle is and if you’ve been under any kind of stress. So if your ovulation occurs early or later than day 14 and you only have sex near that time there’s no way you can get pregnant (the egg only lives 24 hours, you only have egg-white cervical fluid for a couple days a month and sperm can only live in non-fertile cervical fluid for a few hours). If you can you should get a copy of the book, it's a really fabulous tool for TTC. If you need any help learning to chart I, and the other ladies, are more than happy to help. If you are looking for a free place to chart I recommend
