Default pumping and sumplementing with formula

I dont know if you guys can answer my question but here it goes. I am wondering if there is a link between a fussy baby and switching back and forth between formula and breastmilk. My little one is 10 days old today and while we were in the hospital we had to use formula becuase i wouldnt even produce colostrum. Well for the first week we only used formula and now that my mike has finally come in we are still doing both. The past two days he has been sparatically sleeping and the only way he seems to want to sleep or not fuss is to be held. Am i doing something wrong or do you think its the mixing of the formula breastmilk. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. It's very common for newborns to prefer to be held to sleep. What kind of formula are you using? does it have iron it? When do you see your baby more fussy after BM or formula.
My first son was fussy and it got much better between 10-12 weeks.
Congratulations on your baby! My second son just turned 12 weeks. :-)

Aw, congrats! I would say if you really want to bf, then try to start cutting out the formula and getting your baby to nurse more. But like Judi, I doubt the combination is making him any more fussier than a usual newborn! My last two have both had colic and it is a nightmare, but thankfully is gone by four months. Congrats on your brand new one! It's like an early Christmas present, huh?

I don't think it has anything to do with you switching back and forth. It sounds like to me that is a typical baby thing. My llittle one is 13 weeks and she was the same way. I would pay attention to what you are eating because BF babies tend to have more gas and you maybe eating things that hurt his belly.

When Elizabeth was fussy in the beginning my doctor told me to take out the dairy in my diet (which I no longer have to do) and to make sure your baby is getting the hind milk when you are BF..the hind milk is the fatty milk that will coat your babies belly and will leave them more staisfied...after I started to nurse longer on one side before I switched (made sure she got all of the hind milk) it seemed to me that she was less fussy.

Hope that helps...and congrats on your new little buddle of joy.

I agree with all of the above, and just wanted to say, Good Luck! I would keep with the BF and cut back on the formula as your supply allows. My DD is 13 weeks today, and still gets into her times of the day where she just wants to be held, but it is already less and less. I'm guessing it's more of a normal comfort/closeness thing than anything that is bothering him. It doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. Just stick with it, and it will get easier before you know it!

I don't know if it's just coincidence, but I started pumping today too because of the pain of thrush when Danny ate, and because of the stupid day not being convenient, we had to do a lot of mixing in formula in his feedings too. around half-half I'd say. He was ornery and refused to go down easily (never had this issue before), and I was thinking before I saw this thread that it was tummy cramps from the different foods. I've read that breastmilk digests quickly, and formula is a bit slower, and so thought maybe his stomach and intestines had gotten confused.

Have fed the last three feedings of breastmilk only (thank god for the return of convenience) and he's now FINALLY sleeping like a rock.

So I dunno. Could be either I guess, and it could be just your baby's way of reacting to the day, whatever kind of day you had Hope things are going better!
