Default trying one more time....

I have had a lot of problems bfing. This is my second baby, and I had the same problems with this one as I did the other. So I stopped bfing thinking it was the right thing to do....now I miss it, I feel that "guilt". With my first I gave it a good 6-7 weeks and still had a bad latch after working closely with a lactation conultant, mastitis, thrush and I had to go back to school (I had my son over christmas holidays of my last year of college). With this one, we got thrush right away and the latch on my left side wasnt getting better, so I decided to throw in the towel at 2-4 weeks (somewhere in there) Now my daughter is 7 weeks yesterday and I still have drops of milk when I hand express. I got a script for domperidone, and APNO. I also have gention violet. When I pump I get only 2 drops. I have started to breast feed before feeding her a bottle for 10 min on each side, then I pump for 10 min after. I started taking dpd last night.

My question is, can I really relactate to fulltime breast feed? or even just a few supp bottle/day? Am I too late????

Thanks for listening.

I don't have any answers for you, but I think you are doing a great thing! Even if you don't regain full lactation, any amount of breast milk you are able to give your beautiful baby girl is a wonderful boost for her. Remember, a baby is always much more efficient than any pump can be so she is probably getting more from you than a couple of drops!

Good luck, momma!

yes. be aware though, that it can take about the same # of weeks to restablish a supply as it did to decrease it.

You can do it!!! Good luck with the domperidone, it worked GREAT for me. Let us know how it is going and any concerns you have.

Make sure you drink a ton of water, it really does make a difference. If she will latch on I would try nursing, giving her a little bottle and nursing again and then pumping. You may need to do this many times during the day as she will be helping to stimulate your breasts and increase your supply. You should be pumping every 2-3 hours even through the night, think of it as you are pumping for a newborn. With the medicine and the stimulation you should be able to increase your supply to where she can get most if not all of what she needs from you.

It can be done! I just wanted to wish you luck!

You have gotten great advice already, and I wanted to add that you should eat a bowl of regular (not instant) oatmeal every day. As strange as it sounds, it does help.

Make sure you're getting the full dose of domperidone......my doc originally prescribed me on 30mg per day (that would be 1 - 10mg pill 3x per day). The suggested dosage is actually 2 - 10mg pills 4x per day (80mg total) or, it 4x per day is too difficult you can do 3 - 10mg pills 3x per day (90mg total....which is the way I went). I talked to my doctor about the low dosage and showed her the literature on domperidone of Dr. Jack Newman's website and she was perfectly happy to increase my dosage to 90 mg from the 30 mg she started me on......

The other thing to be aware of is that domperidone can take up to 6 weeks to have it's full effect.......I started noticing results at around 3 weeks after the full dosage and have been able to reduce my daughter's formula suppliament over the past couple of weeks now (weeks 3 & 4 on dpd).

Good Luck with what you're doing.....have patience to give it the time it will take and I agree with the post above.......BM is liquid gold to your little one and you should be proud of every amount you can make for her!

Shannon
