Default Spit-up question

My girls are 14 wks old and they spit up ALOT! Pretty much after every meal (during the day). I am BFing exclusively. My let down is REALLY fast and I have more milk then I need. I know its not a for-milk hind-milk imbalance cause they only poo every 10-14days. But I could easily feed one more child if I needed to. They GULP when they are not half asleep while eating, however for their slumber feed and their middle of the night feed they dont even need to be burped they are so relaxed, and they dont gulp...

Is there anything I can do to lessen the spit up?

Uggggg, I'm sorry! Spitup is a nasty nasty problem. And if you've ruled out things like reflux then it's quite likely that you just have babies prone to spitup. And it can last 5-7 long yucky months. I remember a time when Addi wore a bib 24/7 so i didn't have to keep changing her clothes. Addi does have reflux but even on meds she still spitup a ton after every single feeding. I also ebf. Experts say keep them upright after feeding but that never made a lick of difference for us. Hope it gets better soon for you. Till then, just keep telling yourself they will grow out of it.

Thanks!

I thought it was reflux for a while cause they would cry at the breast (after eating happily for a min or two) but that has stopped and they are just spitting up after every feed. And it is right after they eat, when I am burping them, then later on usually. And they do it when on the medicine fr reflux too. I would think too that if it was truly reflux it would happen during the night time feeds too.

I feel like it is a combination of my let-down and them not being as relaxed as they are at night. I am not sure if there is anything I can do about it (hoping someone might have a suggestion). I feed them in their room one at a time in a big comfy chair, so its not the environment.

Not to be negative but I really doubt there's a whole lot you can do. Some babies just spit. Your girls sound exactly like Addi. We keep her on meds b/c when we try to stop she will cry when she spits or burps so we know it still burns her. The meds never reduced the amount of spit up though. There were days where I swore she spit up more than she kept down. I will say though that Addi rarely spit at night. When we were still night nursing she was in bed with me and we would side nurse and occasionally she would spit but mostly would not. I do think being really drowsy and relaxed reduced the chances it will happen. So sorry and good luck that this stage passes quickly for you. Course that means your babies have to grow up and that's really sad too! My teeny 7lb baby will be one year old in a week...sniff sniff. Good for you nursing twins though, that's fantastic! Lucky little girls!

I must say Addi is cutie! I know what you mean about the growing up. I love the stage that my girls are in right now. They smile and laugh this high pitched squeal, its soooo cute!

Yea, I guess I just have to wait for them to grow out of it. The weird thing is its the bigger girl that tosses her cookies the most. I would think it would be Emerson cause she is smaller then Avery (like by a pound!)

So this morning I decided to try something...As I nursed Avery (My worst spitter-upper) I held a cup under my my other breast. Well, Av ate alot slower, no gulping and no choking and had very little spit up after her meal. I actually ended up with 3.5oz of milk in a cup just from holding it there. Then I nursed Emeson on the other breast and had closed up on Av's side, and she had alot less choking, gulping and NO spit-up! So I think I need to do this at most of their meals...I probably could toss my pump out. Who needs it if I get over 3oz without even trying!

Good grief that's a ton of milk. Good for you! Glad you found a method that seems to help.

I know right! It makes me think I have too much milk, but all the advice online is if you have one baby (feeding on one side) and I have two. I would love to get my supply a little more in balance...

hi there

it's me again from Singapore! Now i have a whole new load of problems in my hands. My darling princess is also spitting up. There was a night aft i fed her, and laid her down to change her diaper (now i know i shud never change her diaper aft feeding) she involuntarily vomitted out a whole load of milk. It was quite forceful...u know those drinking water fountains? She was literally vomitting out as though someone presses on an invisible button in her like a drinking fountain. It wasnt projectile in a textbook sense ie 2-3ft, but it was scary, cos she was lying down, and the milk was shooting up like a fountain. She was in a bit of discomfort but not really in pain. Sometimes, when she's at my breasts, she will fuss abit, pull off from my nipple and then fuss to get it back on again. I seriously dunno if she's a refluxer or merely a Happy Spitter cos i seriously dont see anything "happy" about it.

Strangely enough, she does all these vomitting mainly in the night time, particularly starting from 12am to 7am. I have brought this up with her PD, but all he said was since she's gaining weight well, i should just leave her cos this will supposedly wears off when she's 4-5 months old. He merely asked me to continue feeding her RidWind for her tummy. IMO, altho she IS gaining weight, i find it a tad too cruel to jus let her continue spitting up like this. All night, when i've fed her and put her to sleep, she will be arching her tiny body, making wheezing sounds and stretch a lot. Initially people around me kept telling me it's jus "babies growing up and stretching" , even the PD says it's normal, but aft doing some research online and reading up on reflux babies, i'm now suspecting she might be one and all those sounds are her in discomfort and it pains me greatly to see her like this.

Any ways of telling if she is indeed suffering from reflux or shud i jus listen to my PD and "let her be"??

HI Fennho,

Im so sorry you and your baby are having some of the same issues we are.

If she is not crying she when she spits up then I think she is not in pain. Mine used to cry at the breast and arch their backs and spitup, now they just spit up. So I think thats what they mean by happy spitter, but I gree theres nothing really happy about it!

hi patty
sometimes she cries, sometimes she jus look to be in great discomfort. She frowns and arched and writhe. As a first time mommy, i am very distraught to see her this way...i can do nothing to protect her I'm not sure is she colicky or reflux?

I know the feeling. It sounds like it could be reflux. I would talk to your dr again about it. And see if you could try some medicine. I tried the medicine and it did not help so I figure its not reflux. I told the dr I would only try the medicine if it was safe for them if they DID NOT have reflux, cause without some very invasive tests you cannot tell. But, I would definately ask to try something! Be pushy about it!

patty, glad you're getting the situation under control, remind me real quick, how early were your girls?

usually oversupply calms itself out between 6 weeks and 4 months, but you also may want to adjust their ages a bit, unless they were born at 40 or more weeks...

fennho, not sure what a pd is, but it sounds like he doesn'/t know that much and ovbviously knows nothing about bf.

the wheezing, arching, vomiting is classic reflux.

They were born at 37.7 wks. As of today 18wks after delivery. I can still catch in a cup 5oz of BM in the morning and feed both of them on one breast (only in the morning). I dont feed them in the middle of the night anymore. They are sleeping throug and have been for about a month. So it doesnt seem to be any less, but they are getting better at handling the MASSIVE flow so I am sure they will eventually like it better.
