Default question about bf'ing with...

flat nipples.

I would love to bf my next baby a lot longer than my first and I would love to hear of successful stories from others who struggled to bf with flat nipples. Last time I was clueless and tried using shells in my bra that the nurse gave me, then moved onto nipple shields with no luck. Then I resorted to pumping exclusively because he never could latch on that well after 2 weeks of trying. I even saw an LC for a short time. This time I want to be prepared.

I've done research on the net but I'd like to know from personal experience what works and what tricks I can do this time.

TIA

I bought the avent nipplette which worked terrific for me....I wore them before I got pregnant during my pregnancy up until my nipples started leaking (cause theres nowhere for the milk/colostrum to go in the nipplettes so they would pop off...once that started happening I started using medela nipple shields for the rest of my pregnancy and after delivery and here I am breastfeeding for 2 months and going strong!!

good luck! hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your info!

One question: when did you start wearing them? Right when you got pg? Or the second trimester (which I started a few weeks ago?)

THANKS again

I struggled with bfd'ong my first child. Flat nipples and porr suck. I ended up pumping for 12 months. My second child I started with a nipple shield right away after birth and he latched right on and breastrfed on a nipple shield for 7 months. We could have gone longer but I had to return to work and did not want to pump anymore.

Baby number 3 is 1- days old and is having difficuly with her suck as she was preterm. I am pumping again and will continue to put her to breast with the nipple shield. We meet with Lactation next week.
