Icon5 Nursing frequency?

I only bf Hannah for 3mths and now we are getting close to a year w/ Josie and I don't know if she is being overfed, underfed, she is weaning herself, or what. I thought I could find a chart online, but no luck yet. She eats 3 solid meals a day w/ snacks, has one sippy of juice, one of water, and nurses before morning nap (around noon,) snacks on me for a few sips here and there throught the day, then eats again before evening nap at 5-6pm (only for maybe 10mins max,) and then nurses at least 30mins each breast before bed around 10-11pm. She still gets up once at around 2am (sometimes to eat,) and always has to have a 6am feeding. Then she gets up around 8-9am and starts her day again w/ breakfast. Does this sound about right? I am not ready to quit and I guess it is just now coming to me that our nursing days may be getting numbered. Josie still depends on me before she sleeps and even during the night, but she really don't care for me if she isn't tired. Guess I am feeling a little rejected. LOL!

Oh yea, as far as I know she has a lactose sensitvity and gets really gassy and has mucousy bms if I eat ice cream, too much cheese, or have regular milk. I have been drinking lactose-free milk since she was born. I have no idea when to start offering that as well.

Thanks so much!!!!

Once you hit a year I don't think there are any rules. Just totally follow your child. My nursling is nearly 15 months and some days he wants to nurse a lot and others it is just a few times. Some days he has a lot of solids, others he eats like a bird.

Great job for nursing a whole year!!

Lactose from cow's milk or other dairy cannot pass through into your milk. In fact, human milk naturally has lactose; the sugar in your milk that makes it sweet is lactose. It is more likely that she has a sensitivity to milk protein, which can pass through into the breastmilk. It would be wise to wait on introducing all dairy. As long as she's still nursing at least 3-4 times in 24 hours (and 5-10 min totally counts; older babies are very efficent and can drain the breast in under 5 min), then she doesn't need any other source of fat, protein, or calcium. Good to know, eh?

It certainly doesn't sound like she's self-weaning. It is quite normal for a todler to nurse less than an infant; some only nurse once a day at bedtime, but can keep this up for a year or two. You'll know she's self-weaning if she just gradually drops all the nursings sessions. Most babies won't self-wean before 18-24 mo.

One thing I wouls suggest is getting rid of the juice. It's filling her up on empty calories. Replace it with plain water or see if she'd like to bf at that time instead. Ds is 14.5 mo and still doesn't drink any juice; I personally drink it, but not really on a regular basis. Since it's not nessacary, I just don't see the point in giving it to him, especally since there are risks such as tooth decay and it has been shown to contribute to obesity in children!

Don't get me wrong; I'm not anti-juice. Like I said, I love to drink it myself. And it does have good vitamins in it like vit C. But it is mostly sugar (granted, natrual sugar) and water, with no fiber. Especally in young children, it can just end up taking the place of more nutritious foods.
