How to tell if a doctor is not supportive of breastfeeding
Many women think doctors know everything and follow their advices religiously. It's not so in a lot of cases and some mothers end up supplementing or quitting bf'ing unnecessarily. Here is a great article:
Re: How to tell if a doctor is not supportive of breastfeeding
I just wanted to add, it does happen. I saw a new primary MD (female) a few months ago when Jake was 10.5 months old. At the end of the visit she asked if there was anything else she could do for me. I mentioned that I was having supply issues, really wanted to exclusively BF for a full year, not feed formula and I wanted something to increase my supply. She told me there was no nutritional need to continue to BF, that all of the benifits are achieved within the first 3 months. She kinda laughed & said new moms are funny like that...mind you I have a 16 year old~! So I played dumb and asked what type of fluids should I be giving him and she said whole milk was fine. I told her that my pedi across the hall from her advised no whole milk for a year and she then remembered the infant gut was not designed for cow milk until a year or so.
I wasn't so much offended that she though I was dumb because I knew how ignorant she was! I just feel sorry for those women that don't educate theirselves and get advice from someone like that!

and in actuality, the human infant gut isn't designed for cow's milk at all- cow's milk is perfect for calves, not humans

I really enjoy Dr Newman's articles, and his views on breastfeeding. He has been a pioneer of sorts with breastfeeding promotion and also is well known for his opinion of the average md's breastfeeding opinion/knowledge. Thanks for sharing that. Heres a list with links to his other articles for anyone who hasnt read them.. Breastfeeding and "Colic", Breastmilk Jaundice, Myths About Breastfeeding, etc., http://www.bflrc.com/newman/articles.htm
My Dr isnt very supportive, or at least ver knowledgeable. My son is 5 weeks old now, and when I went in at 2 weeks we talked about Dante's constant crying and how it seemed like he was hitting a growth spurt, seemed constantly hungry. He was 8lbs 14oz at birth, but lost quit a bit waiting for my milk to come in.. took a good three or four days. Seemed like he was making up for lost time, and had gained 12 oz in 11 days . Dr said "he shouldnt be eating more than once every three hours, try to hold him off" LOL I just about fell off my seat laughing! It was the most I could do to get him to go TWO hours! He didnt really buy the "growth spurt" theory. Dante LOVES to eat!

you'd be surprised though by how many people think "the dr said it, so it must be true" though.
did you try to inform the dr, or just let it go?
does the dr not eat when he si hungry, just cuz the watch says it isn;t time yet?
Re: How to tell if a doctor is not supportive of breastfeeding
my daughter is 5 months old and only just recently has she started feeding every 3 hours, at 2 weeks I would certainly not be trying to spread out feeds every 3 hours I would just feed them if they were hungry. and even now sometimes it can be 2 hours between feeds but mostly it is 3 hours
Re: How to tell if a doctor is not supportive of breastfeeding
Jeez, Mine are 6 months and still eat every three hours. In the begining they were nursing almost around the clock...I just cannot imagine not feeding a baby that is hungry!

Re: How to tell if a doctor is not supportive of breastfeeding
Dante started slowing down on his feedings slightly once he was eating a regular three meals/day... but 3 hours was still the MOST he would go.... except for at night. Then he went for most of the night.
Now im pregnant again, and my milk supply has gone down somewhat. I have chosen to cut my nursings down to twice/day and bottle is three times.
I did inform the dr actually, not in a snotty way, lots of doctors are ignorant, and it doesnt make them bad people, just not the world's best doctors...
and since the time of that post, he got alot better with his theories of breastfeeding
