Icon4 Help...she wont take a bottle...

My girls were on both boob and bottle almost from the beginning, then my nips healed and my help left and from month ~3 till 4 months old they had the boob exclusively, now Emerson screams if we try to give her a bottle.

I am think about trying a few sippy cups. I have tried many many bottles and nipples to no avail. We have tried offering it when she is not too hungry and really hungry. If she is not too hungry she just chews it, if she is hungry she screams and then is in a BAD mood for the rest of the day...

Do any of you have any advice???? PLEASE I would like to leave the house without her EVENTUALLY...

I feel for ya! E was the same way...and I had to go back to work, so she had to figure it out. I was sooo stressed about it because I didn't want her screaming the whole time I was gone.

What finally worked for us were the latex nipples that go on the Playtex Drop-In bottles. They had to be latex, not silicone. It helped if the person feeding her walked around with her as opposed to sitting down, which is super tiresome on the arms, but better than having a screaming baby. And I can't be in the house...if she can sense me around, she STILL won't take a bottle.

The first time she took a bottle without fighting was after weeks of trying everything under the sun. I was at my wit's end, so DH and I left her with my mom for about four hours. I expected to come home to a very unhappy baby. Instead, I came home to a contented, sleeping baby. She took it no problem when she was hungry enough and when I wasn't around. It also helped that my mom was much calmer about it than either DH or I was.

Hope this helps, even if a little. I know how tough it is!!!!! But kudos to you to doing it times two!!!!

She is so cute!! She was born on my due date! Had mine 2 wks earlier.

Ok, we have tried those bottles and the latex nipples, however we have NOT tried the walking around. My MIL is a nervous wreck when I hand her a bottle to try with Em... maybe I will have her try and I will take a walk so I am far away...I've tried going to other rooms, but probably need to be even further away. And I will tell grandma to take a few deep breaths b4 picking her up. (this is probably part of the issue) The thing that's annoying is I used to give them bottles and grandma used to too with me in the room...

anyways i second the movemnet suggetsion, and if that doesn work, you could try a spoonfeeder or shot glass or flexible cup etc.

So we tried the wlking thng with grandma today and I took a stroll...well it worked, only issue is grandma has bad knees so she cant walk too much.... Although this is an option for her other mommy!

I'll look into the other ways of feeding her, I think they may work, cause she take medicine very well. Everytime we have had to give them tylanal she sucks it right up then makes a face because of the taste...

Patty,

Thanks for the sweet compliments about E!

E took a bottle from me and everyone else for about the first three weeks of life, as I was exclusively pumping until I could get her to latch. So she was used to a bottle, but when it was time to go back to the bottle, uh-uh. No way. Wasn't happening.

Glad to know it helped some. Stressing about feeding is NOT fun!

Oh, and I think I remember you from early on in DIN...you should join us again! We're lots of fun!!!!

I agree - come back to BIN! I can imagine you've been just a bit busy

As for bottles, Vivian NEVER took a bottle. The few times I left her she would just wait until I got back to eat, and then cluster feed like it was going out of style. Irene is opposite, she'll eat out of a bottle, but even then only enough to take the edge off, she still prefers me. Good luck with that!

thanks, please keep on praying for her as well. she isn't mine though. emmy (her mama) is a good friend as well as a former client from one of her older kids, and her hub and my hub went to school together. emmy threw my baby shower for me with dd, and was with me acting as my doula and holding the phone so dh could hear his daughter being born (dh had to wait for his relief to get on the truck, and she was born when he was on the way to the hospital).

I will. She is a brave and beautiful little girl. What a trouper. And what a friend you have in Emmy. You poor thing, and your poor huspand...My DW almost did not make it to the birth of the twins...but that was just because I went from 2 cm to 10 in 20 min and she went to get something to eat, I wanted to hunt her down myself, I had a doula (thank god) who kept me there...

The next time you see little Anna Maria, give her an extra hug from me.

Hope you have some success, my chloe never would take a bottle. when I went back to work, she would just eat cereal in the day, and then cluster feed like a drunken sailor when she was with me, and that is how it has been for the last 4 months since I went back to work. NO bottle, no sippy, nothing, and we tried darn near every bottle/nipple and cup made!

Yep, came home from getting my nails done (1st time since I was in my 3rd trimester!) to find my MIL feeding them cerial...she figured it was easier then fighting Emmy with a bottle.

Seeing as how I am never away for more then ~4 hours I think this is what we will do now that they are able to eat cerial. As long as MIL or their other mommy does not wait till they are starving this should work.

Thanks everyone!
