Default Help

We are trying to get DS to take a bottle of EBM and he will not take it. You have to wait till he's almost out before you can even think of giving him a bottle.

We have tried many of the bottles out there and it's not the nipple on the bottle. It's him..

If anyone has any suggestions we would really appreciate them!! DH is getting frustrated that he can't feed DS like he did DD.

Check out Kellymom.com. I think they have some good info. on this subject.

One tip I heard was to warm the bottle nipple.

I think we are going to give up on the bottle for a while.

I would not do this.

I found that the best way to get my kids to take a bottle was to do the bait and switch... Start out nursing, then tunnel the bottle nipple to their lips, slip your nipple out, and slide the bottle in. 9 times out of 10 (if you do it fast enough and smoothly enough) they find themselves nursing on a bottle no problem.

After a few times, they finally have their "Aha" moment and take it pretty well from there on out.

However, I would just like to tell you that as distressed as your dh might be, the actual "food in mouth" part of babyrearing isn't all it's cracked up to be. Rocking and humming and bath giving, as well as just holding and talking to your baby are bonding and precious moments that anybody can do. Sitting and smiling and getting the baby to laugh are also great things you can do. Burping and patting post feed are great ways to bond, too. The actual milk delivery system isn't necessarily the be-all-end-all of infant bonding, so to him, I say just stay involved in other ways. You'll never meet a more closely bonded dad than my husband and I can count on one hand the number of time he bottle fed either one of our kids. If you walked into our house during our kids' babyhood, it was dh who invariably always had a little infant slung over his shoulder.
