Hi there.... Just had my second baby last week.... I am now TOTALLY and HUGELY engorged. I don't remember if I pumped with my son or not to help? My baby is a great nurser so fat; however, is not ever going to eat what I currently have! I would need 3 or 4 babies for that! I would like some relief and I have been hand expressing and I have pumped a few times... will pumping only make it worse?
The few times I was engorged, I took a nice, hot shower and expressed what I could by hand until I felt better. If you pump to relieve the pressure, but don't empty the breast, I think you'll be OK. Emptying the breast is what triggers the higher production.

I would try pumping just enough to get some relief. When I was first engorged with Cameron, though, pumping was not very successful. I read later that when you still have colustrum pumping doesn't work very well because the colustrum is so thick.
Thanks girls. Things are GREAT! So much easier with the second kiddo. I am proud to say we have not had one supplement - even with a worried doctor (her billi levels were elevated). We go on Monday for a check up and I can't wait to see how much she has gained on mommas milk!
