Re: Domperidone?
I'm sorry I didn't get back to this. If you read my other thread then you know we've had a rough couple of days.
Ok, so in the beginning nursing went well, but then Addi just started wanting to nurse ALL the time. I thought she wasn't getting enough which was TOTALLY wrong but you live and learn. Anyway we started giving her a bottle at night b/f bed and I failed to realize that I needed to be pumping if I wasn't going to feed her. Well cutting out that feeding caused my AF to return which took a disastrous hit on my supply. Addi would try to feed and literally nothing would come out. I was forced to give bottles and wasn't having much luck with pumping. It was devastating. Her latch got very lazy and I felt like things were coming to an end, and at only 10 weeks. My goal was 6 mos so I was totally depressed. My doc gave me Reglan first since that's the more commonly prescribed drug here in the US. I started to pick up my supply but after one week I had a terrible reaction to it, could not breathe and had to go to the ER, so no more Reglan for me. I had read about domperidone and how popular it is in the rest of the world and how few side effects it has. Reglan has a TON of side effects and I happened to have one of the more serious ones. My doc is young and more progressive so he had no problem prescribing the domperidone for me despite it not being FDA approved. The first pharmacy I called refused to fill it but I found another compounding (meaning they actually make the drug in the pharmacy) who would fill it. I started to notice results within days and by the time Addi was about 11.5 weeks old we were back to straight breast and have been formula free ever since. She got the very rare bottle but my fears of nipple confusion left once my supply returned. It is important to pump consistently and I did for months. I finally filled up my deep freezer and stopped pumping. I actually gave away and entire diaper box full of milk to a friend last week and still have another in the freezer. The compounded domperidone was about $40 for 10 day supply. I filled it for a few weeks before I started looking for a more reasonable alternative. I found the NZ pharmacy from a lady on the Born in Jan board who was trying to relactate after several months of bad formula reactions. My first order arrived about 9 days after I placed it and the price was very reasonable. The drug comes in original packaging and I've never been scared to take it. Oh, I also ordered it from Canada b/f I found out about NZ and it was more expensive and worse, it never arrived. They resent my order and it still never arrived so I made them finally refund my money after about 4 mos so I don't recommend that route. Plus, from the NZ pharmacy you don't need a rx and in Canada you do. The NZ pharmacy sells the generic form of the drug but again, I've taken it for months with no side effects. For me it was the miracle that saved our nursing relationship and now that I'm dealing with all this biting drama and having to keep her off one breast I'm counting on it to help me maintain my supply till we can get through this. If you have some more questions please just ask. I think it's an amazing thing your wanting to do and that baby is very lucky to have a mom like you.
