Default Caffeine

How much, if any, is safe while BFing? In What to Expect The First Year they say you can have a couple cups of coffee or a soda and be okay. Does anyone have any more advice? I am a caffeine fanatic and have been watching my intake the duration of my pregnancy. Now I would like to have a Starbucks or something I'm just worried it will make Ava jittery. Any advice would be great!!

Fom my personal experience, 2 cups of coffee in the mornings has never affected DD. A shot of espresso is roughly equal to a cup of coffee, so you should be fine with a single or double Starbucks drink.

Give it a try, and if your little one is affected you'll know

I've never noticed a difference in DD. I have usually at least a can of Pepsi a day...

I think it depends on the kid. I drink a cup of coffee or two every morning. I try to limit it to that. Sometimes I'll have a Pepsi or tea or something and it doesn't seem to bother him but I try to limit that.

I would also say it depends. If I drank half a can of Coke Zero Alex was upset. However this was when he was just a week or two old, and I'm wondering if he'll have more tolerance for it when he's a bit older and has more defined sleep/awake patterns.

firstly, welcome to the bf board

now to answer your ? :
it all depends on the child.

some babies have moms who drink caffeine all day and it doens't bother them. some babies have moms who have a cup or 2 of coffee in the am, and it definitely "wires" the babies during the day. some babies' moms need to toally avoid coffee, tea, coke etc, as well as chocolate (chocolate contains a sunstance called theobroimine which seems to be a stimulant as well, though it does have positive side effects too). or they are fussy and irritable all day after mom has ingested caffeine.

the only way to know is maybe have ONE cup tomorrow and see how she does...

and fwiw, use a different book for bf advice. maybe "so that's what they're for" by janet tamaro or "the baby book" br dr sears or "the breastfeeding book" by sears and sears, or "the womanly art of breastfeeding" from lll...

It does depend upon the kiddo. With my first I could drink very little to no caffeine. The second one didn't bother him at all(he had other things that bothered him).

I have to second to use a different book for BFing advice as well. That series of books is not very sound on BFing as well as other parenting advice.
