Hey Girls,
Anyone else ever had a baby that doesn't poop? History: SHe had two meconium poops at the hospital the day she was born, and then one 'real' poop on day 4 when we were home...then went 11 days without anything so I took her to the doctor (not my pedi, just the doc at the local clinic) and she gave her a suppository (which I know now wasn't the thing to do...she isn't at all constipated, her bowels are totally empty) so she had one poop because of that and then nothing since (that was a week ago) I know it is probably due to not getting enough milk (or enough 'calorie rich' milk) and that her body is using everything else she drinks...but the doctor is concerned and is telling me to supplement her. I am going to wait one more week and check her weight gain again at her appt. on monday, and if she isn't gaining adequately I think I am going to have to start pumping after each feeding and giving her the extra...hopefully that will give her a little more and get those bowels in action. Just thought I would ask if anyone else had any experience with this or advice. Thanks!
My DD goes a few days without pooping since she was born. I would use 1/2 a suppository and that never worked so i stopped that. I would take her temp with lots of vasoline instead. Does she seem in pain, uncomfortable? if not, i wouldnt worry too much. That my opinion and what i would do. Just keep offering the breast and things will work themselves out. I think that supplimenting would make it worse. I make my DD'd oatmeal with formula sometimes and after those days it takes her a few days to poo.
good luck!! Oh, and I have to say, that picture of her is just too adorable!! I acually 'awwwww'ed out loud when i saw that.
Are you breast feeding? I know my BF mommas have said that their babies poo less...current babies and older sibs who were also BF. A suppository at this point sure does seem a bit much...but hey I'm no pedi LOL But formula babies tend to poo more, and babies in general use what you give them, like you said
Breast milk is a natural bowel movement maker too..................huh I agree if she is not in distress or extremly fussy then she is just adjusting to her new enviroment and changes. Have you tried pumping to see how much milk your getting? You will get more via BFing but pumping might give you some answers.
Also if you take the suppliment Fennugreek it can cause some gas in the baby which might make her movements move............
I have a hard time keeping track of 'how many times' a day she nurses...she is on the boob all the time. Probably 8-10 sessions of actual feeding though.
I have been doing breast compression as she is quite a lazy nurser and falls asleep easily.
She has about 5 or 6 wet diapers a day.
I always have to nurse her on both sides but recently I have been trying to keep her one side longer to see if she will empty it a bit more. She gets mad and pulls off once the milk isn't flowing fast, but then when I take her off I can still express more so I know there is more there....so I try to put her back on and sometimes she will try but usually she just gets mad at me.
as much of a pitb it is, i'd suggest a nursing diary for a couple of days.
just jot down approx when a feed starts, and approx when a feed ends.
sounds like you're doing great as far as already knowing about breats compression and tryign to relatch etc.
i also know of moms who've rented a baby scale for a week or so just for reassurance that their babies were getting enough milk, but it isn't somethign i'd necessaarily recommend.
Does she have a lot of wet diapers? If she has plenty of wet diapers, and is gaining weight...she is eating. My DD....not even kidding....pooped once every 7-9 days.....that was the norm from her from the time she was BF until she went to solids......and beleive me when I say that I prayed that we were at home....when that poop finally came!!

She finally had a bm a couple nights ago...but it wasn't huge like I was expecting....so it was on day 9. Maybe that will just be her schedule...to go a while between each one.
Yes, she has lots of wet diapers and we are going back to pedi on mon. to make sure she is gaining enough weight, and if she is then I guess I can just assume that everything is going fine. I will start to keep better track of her feedings today.
My daughter only went every 10 days or so up until she had some solids at about 6.5 months. She rarely eats the solids, but she is pooping at least every other day. I am sure she is fine! Our doctor freaked out too and tried to get me to offer her juice when she was only 3 months or so old.
