Icon5 Attempting relactation, ? about meds

Hi, ladies. I have decided to attempt to re-lactate after 2 months of not bfing. I saw an LC today and am currently pumping every 2 hours, eating oatmeal, taking fenugreek, drinking Mother's Milk tea and lots of water. The LC and I spoke about meds to help induce milk production and increase supply. Does anyone on this board have any experience with these meds? If so, can you share that experience with me? Thanks!

But my worry that is that it causes depression in women who have a history of depression and I do...so I'm thinking about something that starts with a D...I have it written down, but I can't remember it right now. Thanks!

I would definetly discourage using Reglan. I have used it with all 3 kids and have had major issues each time, my dr wanted me to try it 1st. I couldn't stay awake, was REALLY grouch, very dizzy, and was unable to drive. With Eli, I was on it for less than 24 hours and knew I couldn't handle it. Anyway, when I started on domperidone I had NO side effects. It was amazing. It took 2-3 weeks for my supply to increase greatly. Before I started it I was able to pump 1/2-1 oz. Ds was also nursing frequently. By the 3rd week I was pumping 4-5 oz. It was amazing. I did stay on it for long term, from 7 mo. until 13 1/2 mo. and now that I am off of it I still have a decent supply. I rarely pump now but when I do I get 2-4 oz.

I ordered mine through an online pharmacy. I tried 2 different ones and Global Drug http://www.globaldrug.tv/default.asp was fast. I think I got it within 10 days. If your dr will give you a prescription for it you can go to a compounding pharmacy in the US and get it (I have a local one that will ship if you need it.)

I was also using fenugreek, blessed thistle, oatmeal, MM tea, and drinking tons of water. After my supply increased with the domperidone I was able to stop taking all the other things (except drinking tons of water, which I do whether I am nursing or not.)

Good Luck! If you have any other questions about the domperidone don't hesitate to ask. I did a ton of research into it before I started and would highly recommend it to anyone having issues. Congratulations on deciding to relactate and feed your baby momma's milk. It will be great for you!

I echo Mandy. Domperidone does the same thing Reglan does, but much better, and without risk of depression. Domperidone does not cross the blood/brain barrier like Reglan does.

Domperidone is also approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers, and it has a Lactation Risk category of L1, which is the safest.

I would definitely consider it, if you want to go the medicated route for relactation.

Remember, however, that the only two things that reliably bring in milk are pumping consistently while staying hydrated and relaxed and medication. The rest of it isn't really likely to help considerably.

Good luck!

I also love the domperidone......although it can take longer to work. You'll probably find the herbs will give you a better boost in the short term (if they're going to work for you at all) and the dom will kick in later (it can take up to six weeks to see the full effect). I noticed a difference around the 3-4 week mark and was able to stop taking the herbal suppliaments with no difference to my supply at around 6 weeks on domperidone. Hopefully you can start taking it right away as well to give it the time to work......Oh, and make sure they don't under-dose you (my doc did at first!). The correct dosage is 2 - 10mg pills, 4x per day *or* 3 - 10mg pills, 3x per day if that works better for your schedule.

Good Luck!

Oh yeah - keep up that pumping! None of this will help you at all without the stimulation......

Thanks, ladies. I've been pumping as consistently as possible lately and am getting drops! Yay! I ordered the Dom and will be starting that as soon as it gets here. Thanks for the heads up that it may not take effect for a few weeks. Thanks again!
