Default Antidepressants

Does anyone have any experience taking these (specifically SSRI's) while breastfeeding? I've done some research and the data seem to suggest minimal risk, especially to my "old" baby.......

My doctor and I are considering using them, I'm struggling with recurrent depression/anxiety symptoms.

Thanks!

i have no personal experience taking them, but have several friends on them, and several of them nursed during the time they were using them while oithers chose to treat their depression a little more naturally.

i say if you really need the meds, definately take them. better to take the safe ones to nurse with and continue to nurse than not be able to take care of yourself and therefore not be able to take care of your little ones... jmo. hope it all works out for you.

This has some helpful information on the topic.....and also points you in the right direction to look for more answers if you're still not satisfied:

I agree with Mama bear though......gotta take care of you if you want to be able to take care of them

Take Care!

I take Zoloft. My old OB did the study on it and it doesn't really show up in the milk (in most cases in the study done at Case Western Reserve University it didn't show up at all). I feel good and baby gets a happy mommy.

My doc put it to me this way, the risk of PPD in somebody who already has depression is sky-high, and the benefit of taking antidepressants far outweighs the extrememly minimal risk to the baby. Good luck!

Zoloft is the SSRI drug of choice in a BFing mom. I took it with my 2nd when I had some PPD. Did not effect my supply, nor did I notice any effects on my newborn.

Thanks ladies. My PCP, an internist, wanted me to try counseling first, so I'll do that (although I know for a fact he knows zilch about prescribing to BF mothers). It's worked for me in the past, although always in conjunction with meds...so we'll see.
