Re: 7 mos and nursing q3hrs in the day and
My first self-weaned himself right at a year at night and then completely at 16 months(I was preggo, so I think that pushed him along on the weaning bit).
This time, my little guy is 17 months now and we have begun weaning from co-sleeping and nighttime nursing just in the past 2 weeks. It is going pretty well, IMO. He starts out in his room at night and then after he nurses I put him back and then finally anytime after 430am I am letting him stay in bed with us. We are up to the first stretch being 5 hours from the time he nurses until he nurses again. If he wakes between then my husband goes in and comforts him and he usually is out within two minutes. If daddy can't do it, then I go in as last resort so that he doesn't totally upset with daddy.
I will say that my guy HATES the crib, probably b/c for 16 months of his life he wasn't in a 'cage'(for lack of a better word) while he was in our bed. So, we disassembled his crib and just have the mattress on the floor. He loves it and it is great for us. We can go in and rub his back, etc without braking our back over the crib sides.
Just take it one day at a time. 7 months is afwul young(IMO) to sort of parent-initiate nighttime weaning, on an infant that is still wanting to nurse so much. I know it is tough, sounds like my life 10 months ago. However, when I see how happy and adjusted he is I know in my heart that roughing thru in the long-run was right for us.
