Icon5 1st Year Nutrition

Dylan had his 5 month ped appointment this week, and I mentioned that I intend to delay solids until he's showing signs of being ready. My ped is very pro-breastfeeding, pro-natural childbirth... I really like her and respect her opinion. She said that he should be ready for solids at 6 months, and I agree that he will be probably be ready by then.

She said that the main reason she wants us to start solids at 6 months is because he "needs the nutrients" of solid foods. Huh? I'm so confused now. From what I've read, babies don't technically need anything but breastmilk for the first year. I understand that it's good to start solids so he knows how to eat and whatnot...but does he really need more nutrients than my milk can provide?
