Default Help My Son Wont Talk

Ok my son is just turned 2 n 1/2 yrs old. He will say hot, momma, dadda, duck, hi. For dog he say woof, and for cold he says brr. Ive taken him to the docs and they said if hes not talkin by 3 he needs to be evaluated. I didnt start talking till 2 yrs 3months and my husband was 3 b4 he started talking. (which my doctor said that might have something to do with it) now my son understands EVERYTHING we tell him to say or do. I can ask him where things are like ball, shoe etc and he goes and gets it. I tell him to put somehting in the trash in the other room and he runs and throws it in the trash. He can even do numbers ill tell him to get 2 qtips he gets 2 or 4 blocks he gets 4, and so on. But it still worries me that hes not speaking. I have a couple friends with children a few months older and younger and there talking they keep telling me somethings wrong but other than talking hes COMPLETELY up too speed. Any suggestions from anyone????? PLEASE

I would say give it time. He will probably start talking before he is 3. I know a few people who have boys and they hardly speak at all. When is his birthday?

My son will be 3 on July 31st. My doc said not to worry about it but of course I will lol. Kids do what they want when they want it seems. I know he hears me ok and understands. i took him to disney the other day and he could still understand what i was saying and its loud there so his hearing is definately ok. Ill just have to be patient I guess. Thanks for your reply

I understand, I would be concerned too. But I do think it has to do with you and your husband not speaking until 2 1/2 to 3 years of age. It makes sense to me that if you were both late talkers, your son would be too. And if he understands everything you say to him, then that is a really good sign. I hope though that he starts talking soon!

I'm sorry MCSmomma. I completely understand though. I was right there with you. It's highly possible that your son just has a speech delay. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with getting him evaluated and some therapy. My son is in pre-k and we had the speech teacher working with him. It has helped so much that she almost dismissed him at the end of the year. He is totally up to speed in every other way and now he is with his speech, too.

Good luck!!

Lurking:

Hi. I am a speech pathologist and saw your post and wanted to give you my opinion. You can take it or leave it. I work with adults and not kids, but know quite a bit. Boys do speak later than girls and you can certainly wait it out, but I would have your son screeded by an SLP (speech pathologist) to give you piece of mind. I have had many friends and family members call me about this same situation. I don't know where you live, but most states have to offer a headstart program with early intervention services. I am not sure what the rules and regs are with your state. They should offer you services for free. I would take advantage of this while you can. They usually will send an SLP to your home and do a complete evaluation and recommendations. You can try and research this yourself or possibly call your school district and let them know what you are looking for. Good luck.
