Default Playscape safety Help

Rachel you said you did the following the other thread.

We put lawn fabric under the mulch to help stop grass and weeds coming thru. Also tilled and compacted down the area before anything got started.

Can you elaborate? I have no idea what that means and also did you do it yourselves and was it hard.

Does anyone have any tips.

Nope, had them do it. Plus it was free installation, along with free delivery (there is a Rainbow store about an hour from where we live).

First we measured the area we wanted (with extra footage for safety). Then we used a tiller to till up the grass and used a compactor to flaten and make the area level. Next the installers installed the whole thing. Once they were done, we put the down the lawn fabic. We did that afterwards because when they were putting it together, they tended to move the playset often to make it centered in the play area. Then lastly, the mulch, which we got in red to match the playset.

Sara, a friend of ours has the Sunray one from Costco and they like it just fine. Their only complaint was how hard and time consuming it was to put together since it comes 100% broken down in 6-7 boxes. It took him a few weekends to put it all together.

As far as what to put underneath, my SIL has recycled rubber. It's very soft and bouncy and I believe they got it at Rainbow when they bought their system, although I am sure you could probably google it and find it elsewhere and perhaps even cheaper.

Ours is just on our lawn.

We put rubber mulch under our playset also. We bought it at Sam's Club last year.

DH prepped our ground for our playset by himself. He pulled up all the sod, put the lawn fabric down and then covered it with about a foot of 'play mulch' (I think the recommendation is 9 inches to prevent spine injuries in a fall). We have a local mulch company that sells it in bulk and it is what all the local playgrounds use.

We have an actual playground on our property that we maintain. I think there is supposed to be 1-2 inches of mulch for every foot of a potential fall. We also have recycled rubber mulch that we got from a playground company. I also saw it at Cosco the other day.

We put a border all the way around our yard (including the play area). I took a picture of it because I couldn't really describe it very well. My camera battery is charging right now, but I will post pics as soon as it is done. We found this edging at Lowe's.

Here is our playset. We got it for $299 at walmart.

Here is the edging stuff that we used. You can see the weed liner down too. We still need to put mulch there.

He rented a sod cutter and cut the sod into strips, rolled them up and removed them. He then dug the whole area out a few more inches deep so we could put in thicker mulch (just to be extra safe). He bordered the area with those 8 ft long landscape timbers. He put the timbers 3 deep, except for one small spot in the front to make it easier to get in and out of.

Here are some pics:

You can see where he made it lower in the front for easier access at the bottom of this picture:

Completed project (we have since taken the disc swing down (came with it) and put up a baby swing for Mikki:

We bought ours for like $300-400 from Walmart. It came in big boxes and it took Wayne & one of his friends a day to do most of it. Then my dad came over the next day and helped Wayne for a couple hours finish it up. I dont think it was very hard for them to put together, just took up some time.

Im laughing because we just set ours up on the grass. We didnt prep the ground or put down mulch or anything. The set seems fine...

We had looked at the really expensive ones at a playset store, but we werent sure how long we'd be in this house and didnt know if we wanted to make that kind of investment. Now we're staying here, but we figured at $300-400 we can replace it easily with a new one in a few years. Esp. with us getting hurricanes and stuff. kwim?

Here are some pics of ours after we put it up. This was when Kaili was like 2 1/2 though. LOL!

Chelle I can't see your pictures. I looked for the one you had at walmart but they don't have it anymore. I didn't see them anyway.

The mulch is not for the playset it is for safety in case the kids falls off. It cushions the fall. I just want to be extra safe.

Cydni thanks for all the info and pictures. It seems so hard. I might just wait until I can pay someone to do it for me.

Sara, we had our backyard landscaped last year. The company that did it took all the sod out and we just showed them where we wanted our play area and the deminsions and they took it all out for us. We then put down the weed cloth. The border wasn't too pricey. I can't remember the exact cost, but it was something like $40 for two 8 feet pieces. We then had to buy the metal stakes also.
