Default Gestational Diabetes

On Monday I'll be taking the test for GD and for some reason I have this weird feeling that I'll fail. I didn't have it with my son.

I have some questions:

What is life like with it? (diet)

Did it cause you to have to be induced?

Can you travel when you have it?

TIA!

Being convinced you'll have it is a sure fire way to pass. I skipped the 1 hr and went straight to the 3 hr with Mikayla, and passed with flying colors!

To answer your questions:

Dietwise, it's seriously just carb watching. I didn't actually HAVE it per se, I was only borderline. So my diet wasn't uber strict, but still sensible. I was allowed a 30 carb breakfast, 15 carb snack, 45 carb lunch, 15 carb snack, 45 carb dinner and a 30 carb snack at bedtime. You basically eat every 3 hrs.

Since my sugars were never over when I tested, I learned how I could sneak in a treat and not have to be super strict. Like I knew exactly how many chocolate chips I could put in my yogurt at lunch as long as I only had a one-slice sandwich instead of two. I can tell you I never went hungry. You are allowed a lot more carbs than it sounds like when looking at the numbers alone.

In my case it DID NOT cause me to be induced. It would have had Gabe not decided to come on his own. My technical edd was 5/1 (even though I changed it to 4/27 since I was pretty sure I O'd early that month), so they would have induced on the 2nd at the latest. Because of Gabe's kidney dilation, I had already had a weight check u/s at 37 wks, so we knew he was still plenty small and nowhere close to measuring like a GD baby. So an early induction wasn't considered.

As for traveling, I'm not 100% sure. I was never told I couldn't travel, but then again I never asked. I don't see why you couldn't. You can follow the diet away from home as easily as you can at home. I guess maybe if you were insulin dependant and/or were required to see the dietician on a weekly basis, you may be asked not to travel. But I doubt it would matter.

Best of luck passing. I'm sure you're fine!

HI!!!

That's funny because I thought for sure I too was going to fail! (I also thought for sure I would have twins.)

For me, I think pg is becoming old hat, so I just think that something "interesting" has to happen this time! Plus, I've gained so much more weight this time (so far, 12 pounds more than either boy), so maybe that was another reason I thought I might have it. But I passed the 1-hr just fine!

I hope you don't have it! Let us know!!!

I had it with Tucker. You can travel with it. You just have to modify your diet. There were times when my sugar dipped too low that I felt very weak and my heart kind of raced. I never had to be induced because of it. I suppose if you don't take care of yourself they may have to induce if your baby shows problematic signs. I think it can cause heart problems and heavier babies.

Tucker's sugar had to be tested those first few moments of life (meaning he got poked a lot ) So, if by chance you do have it it should be incentive to stick to your diet.

I will say that excercising helps to keep your sugars low. I hated being on the diet but was thankful I didn't have to be on it for the entire pregnancy.

I was certain I was going to have it w/ Carsen but didn't. I had to do the 3hr and failed the fast and the first hour. I passed the second hr and third. What a shock that was.

I had it with Katelyn. It wasn't that bad - and although I was scared out of my mind - I was actually happy I got it. It kept me away from the carbs and greasy foods. (and gaining weight!) We went to Texas Roadhouse frequently because I could have the hearty chicken and steamed veggies. I couldn't eat my yummy grinders with hotsauce anymore .. no fries .. I had to take my blood 4 xs a time for a month - then I only took it twice a day since I knew what I can handle and what I couldn't. desserts were pretty much out of the question. I gained most of my weight in the beginning. And only 8 lbs from 26 weeks to 36 weeks. I believe they are just afraid of having bigger babies... At 36 weeks, Katelyn was almost 7lbs already when i had her. My son was the same - I believe I had GD, when I had him at 34 weeks, he was already 6.5 lbs and almost 21" long. They just keep a closer eye on you and bring your blood checkbook with you at every visit and I saw them every week - no biggy. I liked seeing the doctor..

I had it too. It takes about a week to figure out what you can eat, when without making your blood glucose go too high. I NEVER felt like I was deprived of food. Towards the end, I was having a hard time eating all the food they wanted me too. I didn't have to be induced because of the GD, I had to be induced because I ran out of fluids. (The dr and I think that I may have had a small leak for a few weeks.) I was really upset about it at first, but got used to the whole thing. I even had cake at both my showers. The dietician told me to just make sure I ate plenty of proteins before. And the best part was as soon as Phoebe was out, I could eat ANYTHING I wanted!

Good luck and I hope youpass with flying colors!
