Default Dance Class for Boys?

Kate has been asking to take a dance class so I am planning on signing her up this summer.

I'm having a dilema on what to do with Jack. Kate will be in an hour long 3-4yo class. The dance studio happens to have a 30min 2-3yo class at the same time. I was sorta thinking about enrolling Jack in it. DH isn't crazy about the idea, although he isn't totally opposed either. I'm pretty sure Jack would be the only boy in class.

I think Jack would have fun and would be clueless about it being a "girl" activity. I feel a little guilty that Jack is always doing more female focused activities (he is also in gymnastics because of Kate - which I know there are plenty of boys in both activities, but you KWIM about them being socially centered on girls). He just isn't old enough to do any of the more masculine activities yet. Plus I've heard that gymnastics and dance prepare your body for other sports. Or maybe he'd be the next Justin Timberlake!

What would you do with your little boy?

I would let him take the class. My cousins all dance and when they were little there were a ton of little boys in their classes, so you might be surprised. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask if there are a lot of boys signed up. Maybe that would make it easier for your dh to accept. I never considered how much easier it is for me with two boys; I can get them into the same activities without having to worry about things like this.

I hear ya about dh not liking the idea. Marc wouldn't be impressed if I enrolled them in dance. *rolls eyes* They're doing soccer this summer and Nik is going to go to a 4 day gymnastics camp in August (Nate is too young still.) He'll be going with his (male) cousin who is already taking gymnastics. Marc only agreed to the gym class becase his BIL assured him that there were other boys and it wasn't too girly. What is it with these men?!

There have not been many boys in any of Simone's dance classes. She's been taking since she was two (her wishes). Now, Theo is interested. I'm definitely going to sign him up in the fall. We'll let him take lessons as long as he continues to enjoy it. I think anything that helps you move your bod is a good thing. Plus, they learn some French and some dance history.

You know, when I taught 6th grade, the coolest boys were the ones that could dance. Those were the popular kids--not the out of control kids, but the ones everyone admired. All of the kids would go to other kid's houses after school and practice. I think the popularity of the boy bands etc. really effected the way kids picture dance.

All that being said, Dh would probably give me a second look if I enrolled Ty in dance. Dh would never say anything, but it would give him pause. I agree dance for boys is not typical, but maybe it should be.

Good. I was pretty sure I'd enroll him, but I think I needed some reassurance!
