Icon5 Anyone ditched their cd's yet?

So...I've been cleaning and purging like a madwoman and my latest thing is our cd's. We have so many and we just don't listen to them anymore. We have digital music through cable which we listen to around the house and we also have our ipods. I honestly don't know the last time I played an actual cd.

Even so, I am nervous about selling/trashing them. I was thinking I could download them onto an external hard drive so I would have them just in case, but then I started thinking, well what will I do when my hard drive becomes outdated and is no longer compatible with whatever my latest computer is? That's also my fear with my digital pictures btw.

Are any of you cd-less? What are you using instead?

I still use my cd changer in the car so we've still got all ours. We don't play them at all in the house though so they are sitting in an open box in the garage!

We got rid of a ton of cd's at our last yard sale. We kept the few that we might want to listen to or the ones that we have on our ipod. Other than that we don't have a ton of cd's

We recently did a clean out as well, and did get rid of quite a few CDs. I have a 6 disc changer in my car, so I do use them still, but the rest of our CDs, I threw out the cases/covers and put all the discs in a CD folder. It hardly takes up any space, and it's easy to find a CD if we want one. (Which is rare!)

DH got thyem all on our computer now, so we gave some to a guy on craigslist making a giant chinese parade dragon for a college art project and my Nana uses foam pieces to turn them into little animals you hang on the front porch and they twinkle in the sunlight. Pretty cute.

They also make great coasters

We still have all of our CDs... in our storage unit! We have everything downloaded on iTunes and backed up, so I want to get rid of them. DH just isn't ready yet. Even though they aren't in my way, just knowing they are in storage annoys me.

Well, it sounds like I'm not the only one ready to purge their cd's...

Here's the thing though...we're getting a new computer this week because mine is old and decrepit. I don't know what to do with all of the music that is already on my computer. My computer is so old that the new external hard drives aren't compatible, so I can't really back up my music and transfer it that way. The music is all on my ipod, but I don't know that when I plug my ipod into a new computer that the music will download from the ipod to the computer. So...do I now have to create cd's so I can transfer my music to my new computer? If that's the case, then I might as well keep my original cd's because that is seriously a lot of waste...Am I making any sense? Any thoughts?

Not being a computer person... can you back up your music on a flash drive and transfer it that way? I *think* that you can use your iPod and transfer all your data to the new iTunes as long as there isn't anything in the new iTunes yet. I *think* it will erase anything already there. (that is what my BIL told DH...)

We also make playlists on our computer BUT DH hasn't gotten rid of any cd's. It's the What IF's that get us.
