Icon5 Slings and Back pain

Hi. I am looking for advice about slings. I have a 2 month old DD. I would like to try to use a sling with her. I have terrible back pain. I cannot use a front carrier for more than a minute or 2. I thought a sling might be better. Any suggestions about what to try that might minimize the stress on my back would be appreciated.

Thanks...Robin

I wish I knew which kind would help you..... what kind of carrier(s) are you using now?

Mei Tai carriers are helpful since they distribute the weight over both shoulders. You also can use them to carry baby on your back instead. I get bad back aches and my mei tai carrier (a Kozy Carrier) helps alot. I also love my ring sling though. I switch back and forth during the day and rarely have problems with my back.

What carriers have you tried?

Thanks for your replies! With 2 kids I am finding it difficult to post.

The carrier I have is a "tot tender". It is a hand me down from my sister. Probably 8 years old. I am just hesitant to buy a new one when I don't know if I will be able to use it.

I am going to look at the Mei Tai carriers. Thanks for the suggestions. Any others???

Thanks...Robin

Ring slings kill my shoulders, so I don't suggest them to anyone with back pain.

I do love my Moby wrap. It distributes the weight on both shoulders and is pretty easy to use.

I also find that my back feels better if I wear my baby up high on my chest rather than lower on my belly.

My ring sling killed my back, too. We have a wrap now and I love it. Puts weight on both shoulders and it's easier to carry DS up high.

I have a really bad back (I'm 6 foot tall, have a broken tailbone and recenly had a back injury from the eppidural I had for my c-section)

I have had a lot of luck w/ the Moby Wrap and a carrier called Babytrekker. I'm shocked to say but I've also had a lot of luck w/ my Ella Roo ring sling. IT's just that it has to be worn the right way. Make sure the fabric is spread out over your shoulder really well, and the fabric is opened up really wide across your back and make sure the fabric goes right up as high as possible under your other arm. When you look at me head on there is a perfect line from arm pit to arm pit. I also only carry baby facing me and upright, centered on my body. I also make sure that I adjust it really well so fabric is really well fitted and keeps baby really close. When baby sleeps I tuck his head in the fabric, when he's up he pops his head out and looks around. HTH
