babywearing mom?
This is a discussion on babywearing mom? within the Babywearing forums, part of the Parenting Babies & Toddlers category; Ok, silly question alert!

I always keep up with babywearing info and have been in the market for a great sling since before my baby girl was born. Unfortunately nobody picked up on my registry note about desiring a maya sling or mei tai, and both are still not within my budget! So I took it upon myself to buy a Evenflo Snugli ... it only cost me $20 on sale. I wanted to be carrying my DD so much, I just couldn't wait or resist! My daughter loves being in it on walks or just around the house, and I love the closeness it creates between us. BUT I am wondering, and here's where the silly question comes in ... do you have to have a ring sling, Ergo, or met tai type carrier to be a "babywearing mom"? I'm not dense, I swear! But I never see pics of moms using evenflo or other types of "commercial" carriers on babywearing sites and just wondered. Would I be balked at out the door if I attempt to join a babywearing group without one of these other carriers? Inquiring minds want to know Thanks!
Oh and if I had a sewing machine....I'd be SO on making a ring sling! gaah I want one!
You are most definitely a babywearer. Any carrier works. Weather it is a home made POC (piece of cloth) that you tie up quick, a commercial carrier, or a $400 OOAK. The fact that you are wearing your baby is what matters.
The reason you don't see pics of those carriers is because on most sites the ladies there know that there are other more comfy choices.
Have you tried looking at thebabywearer.com at the FSOT boards? You can usually find very good deals there.
Oh, and if you were to try to join a group I would just let them know right away that you know there are better carriers, but you are using what you can until you are able to buy better.
Thanks for the reply! and for clearing up my confusion I was looking thru the links here on the sticky thread and I did find a very inexpensive ring sling made by a very nice mom @ snugglebugcarriers.com who even emailed me with a few carrying tips, and turned me on to youtube ... apparently there are some good vids there showing different ways to carry baby. So now I'm not feeling so down about my prospects for getting me a different kind of carrier! thank you!
I know this thread is a little older but may I suggest you make your own wrap? IT's just a really loooong pc of fabric and sooo much more comfortable than the carrier you use right now
You could also look at diaperswappers.com. They have a forum to buy gently used carriers. I've found them for as little as $5 shipping included there

I tried the no sew thing but realized a large sheet doesnt work LOL Thanks for the link, I will check it out. Your post also reminded me to check out measurements online so I can get fabric. She's outgrowing her carrier fast and refuses to face forward in in ... I dont think she's going to like being in it much longer!
Blue! I have been browsing thru diaperswappers thanks to your suggestion! Thank you for sharing those links because there are SO MANY to look thru!! I just added my intro there today too
I recently made a wrap out of a black cotton queen sz sheet. It's now 98in long and 35in wide and I am learning ways to tie it and make baby girl comfy. It saved me tonight when she was fussing too BTW! I wrapped her up in it in a "heart to heart" carry and just did my thing around the house and before I knew it, she was out. I even sat on the couch and read a mag letting her sleep in it LOL she's still snoring behind me now too!
Here is a little preview of it
as is, it's no sew but I'd like to clean up the cut side and maybe add 2 rings.
Holy cow! That looks GREAT, you did a good job! She looks so comfortable! I used to wear Reece in my moby as he slept when I was at the computer
I wish I would have sent you a Mei Tai I had. I was selling it for $35 and a mom on diaperswappers offered me 4 pocket diapers for it. I agreed... Got the diapers yesterday and the diapers are in such poor shape and the are so poorly made I won't use them and probably won't even be able to sell them to recoup some $$ I would have prefered to send it to someone like you who really needed it (the mom I sent it to really didn't "need" it) for free rather than getting screwed in a bad deal. Ugh! Live and learn

Oh that is frustrating! I figure someday I'll treat myself to a mei tai ... so many of them that I've seen are so pretty, I'm afraid I'll start hoarding them like I do purses Thanks for the kudos on my first time making a carrier I'm so proud of it! And DH thinks we look adorable when I have it on LOL I'm about to put her in it right now ... Miss Fussypants's teeth are bothering her!!!
A LOT of WAHMs make slings and sell them for much less than the big companies do. I do have a sewing machine and have made a ring sling for ds and really more slings for litlest dc than are reasonable, lol.
I'm not in business yet since I stilll work four jobs outside of the home, but I'm sure you can find another mom who can whip something up for you for not much money when you can afford it.
I also see hotslings at the consignment store for $10 and Nojos (which is what I used for dd) and OTSBs (which I used for ds) at thrift stores around here for $5. They aren't the greatest, but they were the newest hottest thing when my teens were tots and they worked.
Congratulations on your first wrap! I really do think they mean more when you make them yourself.
Hey here is a site that has alot of do it you self carriers i'm working on makeing a Mei Tai for Brayden but i'm not good a sewing so it may be a while I've made just a tie on wrap for Nathan when he was a baby and i just went to the Fabric store and for a few yards or a light fabric and on sale 2 bucka yard and tied him on he loved it I bought the Infantion sling this time and i hate it it's too long and bulky and just unomfy all around http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/index.html i hope you can get some ideal here
