Default Wanting to try wool...

I have never tried wool before. With my DD i used pockets. With Brayden i'm venturing into fitteds and am really loving it. I so want to try wool, but don't even know where to begin. I hear they are breathable, but would it be hot here in Florida? Is it hard to take care of?

Default Re: Wanting to try wool...

First, I must warn you....I wool. Fitteds and wool are my favorite system to use. So I'm a little biased. When I first started cloth diapering, I steered clear of wool. I was afraid of caring for it and skeptical of it really working. I started using wool out of desperation to find some system that would work for my heavy wetter at night. I tried everything out there and when I finally gave in to trying wool I found that a wool cover and fitted was the only thing that would work. I have never looked back since.

-I continue to use wool for several reason:
1. Wool is a natural fiber. I like the idea of using natural products.

2. Wool is a very breathable fiber. A wool cover paired with a prefold/prefitted/fitted keeps the air circulating on baby's skin and helps keep diaper rashes away.

3. Wool covers and a good cloth diaper can be a very bullet proof system. I've never had a leak with a wool cover (which was especially important to me at night time).

4. Wool is a self drying fiber. It has the ability to absorb 30% moisture and evaporate it into the air. And the lanolin found in the wool fibers also helps to repel mositure.

5. It is antibacterial and antimicrobial. This combined with it's self drying properties allows you to use wool covers over and over again without washing (unless they get soiled). You will also find that you don't need as many wool covers as you do with other kinds of covers since they can be reused over and over.

6. Wool is a natural insulator. It has the ability to regulate temperture. It keeps baby warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

and here is a great article on the science of why wool works:
