Icon5 I need your advice

hi, I bought my son 2 bumgenius AIO last November to try out and then I kind of stopped using them (it doesn't help that my dd misplaced one of the inserts during play.) I want to get back into it but the more I look at the different diapers, the more I am liking the idea of using prefolds with covers.

My concerns..

-He is 8 months old now and still a heavy wetter..
-The bumgenius were v.2.0 so they don't have the little fold over up front like v.3.0. He seems to leak lately when I use them as his shirt touches the top and gets wet. Am I doing something wrong?
-He's a good sized kid. 19+ lbs and seems to be longer in the trunk... I buy him in 18 month clothing.
-bulk. he's already a bigger kid (next to my dd he seems giant) I don't want to try to minimize the bulkiness as much as poss.

What I am thinking...
-I'd like to go with prefolds or inserts with the diaper covers.. since I still have to change him often the thought of wiping/rinsing out covers and reusing them sounds like it will be a better fit for us..
-I'm looking at bummis and bumkins.. I think I'm liking the bummis more but I just don't know much about them and I don't have any retailers nearby.
-Will I be able to do the prefolds without snappi or pins realistically, I really don't want to have to use those..

I'd love to hear your opinions, esp. if you have a boy.. I'm just worried about him leaking up front and kicking myself thinking I made a bad decision..

Thank you so much, I just spent 3 hours tonight reading and searching and reading..

Default Re: I need your advice

I would get premium prefolds and large bummis covers. I personally would grab some snappi (at least 1 though if your kids like inserts to play with, 2 may be better)

For "trial" purposes, probably 2 covers are best since that way to can wash one as the second one dries.

Premium Indian prefolds are probably the best route to go. Little-lions use to have the best price. Not sure anymore. The more you wash them, the better. If you can grab used, it's best as it take minimum of 3+ wash to prep them.

For heavy wetters, you may also want a liner/doubler. Hemp usually is great for it. You don't want microfiber with prefolds since you really don't want it next to the baby's skin.

After you "test" the prefolds, fleece or wool would be better for longer periods as they have less chance of getting wet. I personally prefer fleece since it's machine washable.

My DS is 23 months and we finally had to give up on prefolds since he won't sit long enough for them. We use fitteds and fleece covers.
