i believe you're talking about this article, right?

my daughter only uses her binky until she's deeply asleep, then she lets it fall out and doesn't need it the rest of the night. lately, she's not even been grabbing it at bedtime half of the time. so i don't see how it would prevent SIDS since most babies let it fall out soon after falling into a deep sleep. perhaps there will be follow-up studies with more definitive answers!
i notice the AAP mentioned again that co-sleeping increases the risks of SIDS, but they didn't specify *what kind* of co-sleeping. there is evidence that unsafe co-sleeping is as bad for babies as unsafe crib sleeping. it's never safe to have too many blankets, loose bedding, or anything that could obstruct babies' breathing, you know? even having loose sheets on the adult bed could cause little folds in front of baby's face, creating a pocket of carbon dioxide that the baby re-breathes, which is a leading cause of SIDS in cribs. so my opinion is that it's up to parents to make their bed as safe as a crib. if they do that, then co-sleeping is by far much safer for a baby, since the mother can respond instantly to any problems that arise. co-sleeping babies also pick up mama's breathing patterns, which has been shown to reduce SIDS.
i'm not sure where the binky issue falls on this. perhaps co-sleepers are more likely to quickly put the binky back in if the baby fusses, giving them even more SIDS protection? will wait to see more research on this one
