Default new here and question...

Hello all!

I am new here, hope it's okay to jump in. My little guy is almost 6 weeks old and we have been almost exclusively cosleeping since the hospital. We bought a cosleeper and he will occasionally sleep in it, but he tends to prefer our warm, cozy bed! Which leads to my question...what to do about our sheets and blankets? Do we keep them far from him, or use them cautiously to keep him warm? So far we have been tucking them tightly under him at about the level of his tummy, but it makes me a bit nervous in case he kicks them off and up over his face. He is not big on swaddling so we are not consistent in using a swaddle to keep him warm at night. What does everyone else do about this?

Thanks so much!!

my daughter loved being swaddled, but only if i left her legs free (don't lift the bottom of the blanket up over the legs, but do the rest). then she loved it! we also had a co-sleeper, but she preferred to sleep on me or in the crook of my arm. i was totally paranoid about a sheet or blanket falling over her face, so i finally figured out a system: i'd either swaddle her, or as she got older i'd zip her into a cozy, warm sleep-sack ... then she'd be in the middle, *on top* of the blankets and sheets. as long as her jammies and fuzzy sleep-sack were warm enough, she didn't even need a blanket. on really cold nights, she'd put up with a hat. over time i realized i knew exactly where her body was in relation to mine, that's something that happens to every mama who co-sleeps, from what i've heard. she has her own blankie that she loves, she's been sleeping with it since 6 months, i just kept my covers below her waist and she uses her blankie. and of course now at one year i don't worry at all, she's great at pulling anything off her face.

one thing i did was teach her "peekaboo" very early on, and by 3 months she was always pulling any fabric down to play peekaboo. so that also made me feel much safer. hope this helps!

Thanks, that is a help! I hadn't thought of a bunting bag-type thing, we will have to look around for one...

In the meantime maybe we will try to convince Fionn that swaddling is a good thing! He goes hot and cold on it. He likes to struggle to get his arms out, so I find that if he does settle in a swaddle, he sleeps for a shorter period...I guess because he wakes somewhat and gets annoyed that he can't move his arms around!

I try to just use sheets at night.. though our apartment is always very warm so staying warm isn't an issue.

I've co-slept with four kids and I just keep them under the covers with me. My kids, 15,14,9 did just fine and my 7 week old does too. I am always aware of where he is, I guess I'm a fairly light sleeper.
