Bad News O/T
Hey ladies! I just though I'd let you know that I have self-diagnosed myself with diabetes. Just for the heck of it yesterday, I was at my dad's house, and I asked him if I could use his meter to check my blood sugar. I tested it and it was 210! That freaked me out! Normal is in the low 100's or lower. So I went to Walgreens and bought a temporary meter so I can continue to test myself. I went home and it was 190. Not good.
Well, I thought I'd do a little experiment since it was just by happenstance that I used my dad's meter, and I never would have known otherwise, I went out to the Olive Garden with my roomate and some of her friends. One of her friends had a meter, and decided to let me use it. Before we started eating, it was down to 161. Still not good.
Now pasta and carbs of all kinds are my absolute love in life! So I ate what I normally would, breadsticks, salad, and a plate of some chicken and dumplings. No desert. We came home, and a couple of hours later, I tested it and it was 388!!! I freaked! And my roomate looked at the reading and said "it's a lie! it's not right!" I told her to go ahead and test herself and see what hers was. So she did, and hers was right where it should be at 107. And she had eaten the same type of food at the same time as me!
I felt it too! Ever since I got home I'd been just feeling like crap and so tired you would never believe it. I went to bed wondering if I would wake up in the morning! Well in the middle of the night, I woke up extremely thirsty, and without really thinking about it much, I downed the rest of the bottle of V8 Splash strawberry banana. It was a pretty big bottle, and there was over half of it left! That was somewhere around 2am. So tons of sugar there. Then I woke up about 9:30am and took my blood sugar. It was 179! Very high for a morning reading...high anyway!
So obviously my body is not producing insulin like it should be. I've been afraid to eat this morning but my tummy's been growling and I know I need to eat, but I don't know what. I did have some yogurt and a few crackers, but that's all I'm doing for now.
It's no wonder I've been so tired lately, and always sleeping in and taking an afternoon nap! Well we still don't have insurance, and I just called the company that gives us insurance, and they said that the company that David was just fired from hasn't paid their bill for the insurance for July and August! It's not just for him, it's for everyone there! So the guy told me that we should have gotten some kind of thing to pay into it in the meantime, but I haven't seen it. He's with a new company now, but if these jerks had paid, he would have had enough hours to have benefits starting in September! Now October is just around the corner, and they better pay because I need to go in!
So that's that. I can't believe it! Well actually I can...I just didn't think it would hit me this early. My dad got it when he was around 75, about 10 years ago. I'm 34! I'm too young for this!

I am sorry to hear this. I hope that things get better and David gets some insurance so that you can go to the Dr and see what is going on.
wishing you the best of luck

Re: Bad News O/T
 Jenny!
I thought I would weigh in on this...I have a very close friend who is diabetic, and I am borderline hypoglycemic (meaning I make too much insulin in relation to sugar intake). Basically the diet i'm supposed to follow (which I haven't been)is similar to a diabetic, so I will outline it for you. I hope it helps!!
You definitely want to stay away from anything sugar based (obviously). This doesn't mean that you can't have anything, but just watch the intake. And, if you know you are going to be eating something sugary, I normally would watch my food intake for the rest of the day and that way I could "cheat".
You also want to stay away from white-flour products (breads, pasta, etc) and go with whole grain/wheat products. These take longer to break down than the white flour, and they don't affect your blood sugar as much. Not to say you can overload on them, but it is an alternative.
I am supposed to eat a lot of protein - meats, cheeses, etc - and eat every 2-3 hours (snacks) in addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For snack, I would have things like pepperoni and cheese on whole-wheat crackers, plain crackers.
If you want to do more research, a good diet to follow is the Atkins diet since it is carb based. They have great suggestions.
if you need more help or want to talk, PM me.

Re: Bad News O/T
Jenny this SUCKS! I agree with you that it was probably no accident that you just decided to test your blood sugar out of the blue. Since your dad is diabetic, he can probably give you advice.
Sometimes you can keep on top of this with diet. Eating high fiber, protien and complex carbs at regular 2-3 hour intervals can help keep blood sugars level throughout the day. Fiber takes longer to digest and keeps the blood sugars from spiking and dropping all day long. Getting tired after eating can be a sign that your BS is spiking. Testing regularly through the day will help you learn how YOUR body works and what foods and times work best for you.
Or you may benefit from metformin in conjucntion with watching your eating. You may not even need insulin shots. My mom was on metformin for years and didn't take care of herself........didn't take it seriously, ate cookies a bag at a time and sucked back bottle after bottle of pop every day.........now she takes insulin.
I have also wondered if I am diabetic but all of my tests come back normal. I'm still suspicious since my mom said her tests were normal for years before they figured it out.
There is a ton of information on the net but don't let that overwhelm you.
I'll be glad when you can finally get in to see the doctor and get this figured out! I hate it that you have to wait. Try not to let the numbers get you upset Jenny.
Until you can see your doctor, look up diabetic diet and try to do the best you can till you can get in to the doc. Any changes you make towards eating better will make a difference.
We're all here to talk about this with you.......and offer you all the unsolicited advice we have!
Love ya lots Jenny

Re: Bad News O/T
Jenny - forgive me for jumping in here, but my mom, uncle, and grandfather are all diabetic, and i am insulin resistant. In all likelihood, you would have type 2 diabetes, which is usually non-insulin dependent. The biggest problem for people with type 2 diabetes is that you are insulin resistant - meaning you produce insulin, but your body doesn't know how to use it properly. There are oral medications you can take and control it, and diet can help significantly. With proper diet and exercise, many with type 2 diabetes can completely go off medication, and even reverse the diabetes.
A diet like South Beach is also a good diet for diabetics. It advocates lower carbs, lean meats, and moderate fruit intake. Fatty foods are also bad for diabetics, because fat, once stored, will be converted to sugar when the body burns it. Losing weight can help significantly (I know, easier said than done!), and staying away from simple carbs (white breads, white pasta, etc.) is a good idea. Exercise also helps the body better process sugars - the first thing the dr told my mom was to lose weight and exercise. The second thing she said was stay away from carbs, fats, and sugars.
Whatever you do, get to a doctor quickly, get tested, get on some medication, and focus on a more diabetic-friendly diet. GL!

Re: Bad News O/T
I'm jumping in too... I was just lurking.
So sorry to hear this. I know you've had a string of bad luck lately, I've read some of your other posts.
I agree with Tkeys. Two years ago I love about 40 lbs in 6 months just from stopping sugar and most carbs. I ate LOTS of chicken and salads and stuff like that. I didn't exercise at all though. It just came off.
Would it be hugely expensive to just go to the doctor uninsured? And just pay for it?
I had blood work done a year ago to determine blood sugar levels. It was pretty extensive. Our insurance covered it but the bill was only about $135. If you feel like your health or well being might be at a high risk it would be worth the money.
I'll be checking in on you

Re: Bad News O/T
Thanks everyone for all the advice! I made an appointment for Monday morning. It's just that today, I just got off night shift...sleep night shift, but I couldn't sleep because of a cough...that's the other thing. I think I got my brochitis back that I just got over. I slept for a very little bit in the recliner but that is not enough. I HAVE to watch Days today cause Shawn Sr. is gonna finally talk, so I gotta be up by noon. Ugh! I wish I could just sleep till I have to go back to work at 2! Anyway, this morning I made sure not to eat anything before I came home, and I tested and it was 186! For a fasting number, that's not good at all! Does anyone know if DIET pop would cause my sugar to go up? Cuz every morning I drink a can of Diet Mountain Dew. So I did have that, but I figure that since it's diet, it doesn't have any sugar. Could it have raised it though?
