As long as your spirit is strong and confident you can face anything. But if you allow your spirit to be crushed under the weight of despair and discouragement, you become a victim. If you allow this to go on for too long, it’s harder to pull yourself out. That’s why it’s essential that you begin practicing the following six suggestions immediately.
1. One way to spiritually overcome discouragement is simply to thank God for as many things as you can think of. Your situation may look bad, but if you give thanks for the good things God has given you, you start acquiring a new outlook and a renewed spirit.
2. Another thing that has helped countless individuals is to get into your mind one or more of God’s great promises. He is with you. With His help, you can face anything. If you repeat a Bible verse such as “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee . . . ” (Isaiah 41:10 KJV), you will find courage and strength filling your heart and soul.
3. There is no problem, defeat or difficulty that cannot be overcome through prayer. What is it that is discouraging you? Do you think it’s too big for God to handle? I assure you that if you will take your problem, whatever it is, and really turn it over to the Lord—if you will let go and let God—wonderful things will begin to happen.
4. Do something new and different. When you get discouraged you are likely to freeze, to get in a rut, withdraw into yourself and magnify your difficulties. Go somewhere or do something that can give you a new perspective on your problem. From a fresh point of view, it may not be all that bad.
5. Go out with friends, especially someone you can confide in. If you share your burden with the Lord and one or two trusted friends, they can help you in unexpected ways.
6. Make a real friend of Jesus Christ. I believe completely in His power to remove any weakness, heal any disease, resolve any difficulty. Talk to Him often. He understands everything. As the old hymn says,
What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
