Infuriating
As a doula, my own birth experiences often come up when talking to potential and current clients. So, the fact that I had a VBAC comes up.
More than once, I have gotten this response: "So and so doctor says it's illegal to have one of those in California/this county now".
Illegal?! Give me friggin break. It's so dangerous they had to make a law about it? I think not.
I guess that's their way of simplifying it for patients.

Re: Infuriating
I've heard that one, too. It's despicable and horribly unethical. I'd like to know when ACOG reccomendations became law? They may be a powerful trade organization, but I'm pretty sure they don't have that kind of power.

Re: Infuriating
I had to get a new GYN DR b/c I moved to a different state. I asked her if the hospital in our area did VBAC's and she said "Yes... but the ACOG doesn't recommend doing VBAC's"
That seems like a misleading answer to me. :-/ Doesn't give me much hope that she'd be willing to try it.
I guess I need to find out if The Farm people in Tennesse do VBACs.

Re: Infuriating
Yes, the farm do VBAC, but I've heard they can be kind of picky. I can't find ACOG's official statement about VBAC, but this is a link to their educational pamphlet about it http://www.acog.org/publications/pat...tion/bp070.cfm Sure doesn't look like they 'don't recommend it'. And I know there's absolutely nothing like that in the actual policy statement...just can't find it atm.

Re: Infuriating
IIRC, The Farm will only do VBACs for moms w/ double sutures (mine is single) and maybe proven pelvises, but I'm not sure on that one.

Re: Infuriating
That is awful! I can't believe that women believe it!!!
Of course, if you are told your doc/hospital doesn't allow it, I can understand (even though we all know it's not true), but illegal?!?!

Re: Infuriating
I would love to have a VBAC and I am currently looking for an OB that deliver my twins. There are two hospitals that will allow for VBAC as long as an OB is present from beginning to end. Thankfully there are several of OB's that will perform a VABC, some have their practices in the hospital for that reason.
Wish me luck ladies.

Re: Infuriating
Hello, new here, was just wondering. I had to sign a consent to future c-section and waiver of future vbac right before the emergency c-section delivery of my DD. We are TTC #2 right now and I really want to try natural again if I get the chance. But we have no other hospitals within an hour of our home. Any suggestions?

Are you freaking kidding me?! What were they going to do if you didn't sign it, let you die? That just POs me to no end. I've never heard of anything like that before. I would call the patient rights person at the hospital and talk to them. I would also ask to see your hospital records, not a copy, but the real ones (I've seen mine) and then find the paper, pull it out and tear it up.

Re: Infuriating
They just told me it was policy and that I needed to sign saying I understood that I would not be allowed to do a VBAC with any other deliveries at their facility. All I knew at that point was I have been in labor for 36 hours and now you are telling me she's stuck!!!! Are you flipping kidding me and you want to talk about doing this ever again?
Maybe I could just go into labor next time a little early and stay home long enough to have to do a VBAC! I'm just a block from the hospital anyways!

Re: Infuriating
A form like that can't possibly be legal, especially as it was signed under duress. Personally, I'd try to find a midwife and have a homebirth, but if that isn't an option and the hospital tries to bring it up, you can tell them you know it isn't binding. There is no way in hell they can legally have a form that makes people give up their rights to choose future treatment.
Maybe contact ICAN's Advocacy Director, Gretchen. You can contact her through www.ican-online.org, under about ICAN, Board of Directors. Also, some reading that might help http://www.ican-online.net/resources..._vbacbanqa.pdf
