Quote
To the Editor.
As a pediatrician, I am dedicated to providing the best possible care for all of my patients, and I do so without regard to race, financial status, or gender. Thus, I am concerned about the apparent disparity in the opinions of the AAP regarding the circumcision of males and females.
In July 1998, the AAP Committee on Bioethics issued a statement condemning the mutilation of female genitalia.1 Although female genital mutilation (FGM) exists in many horrendous variations, that statement clearly included within its definition of FGM "excision of the skin surrounding the clitoris" [paragraph 6]. In that report the Committee also clearly stated that pediatricians should "decline performing all medically unnecessary procedures to alter female genitalia" [paragraph 4]. Furthermore, under the heading "Cultural and Ethical Issues" the Committee stated that the parents' cultural, societal, and religious beliefs do not give them the right to consent to a medically unnecessary procedure for their child.
Therefore, I was dismayed to read that in March 1999 the AAP Task Force on Circumcision failed to afford the same protection to our male patients.2 This report stated that male circumcision "is not essential to the child's well-being"http://pediatrics.aappublications.or...rmal/mdash.gifin other words, it is not medically necessary. However, the Task Force stated that "it is legitimate for parents to take into account cultural, religious, and ethnic traditions ... when making this decision." This is something with which I strongly disagree. Just as no surgeon would perform a medically unnecessary appendectomy just because the parents desire one for their child, so should we, as the protectors of children, refuse to perform unnecessary mutilating procedures on our patients simply because of their parents' desires. Remember, we are not "religious" or "cultural" or "ethnic" practitioners. We are physicians who should practice medicine, not rituals.
Therefore, I hope that my fellow pediatricians will join me in declining to perform medically unnecessary procedures to alter either male or female genitalia, and I ask the AAP to reconvene the Committee on Bioethics to review the policy statement of the Task Force on Circumcision.

This doctor is very knowledgable about intact foreskins, told me that there is no reason to ever retract, and that my boys should be retractable sometime between now and when they become sexally active. He is also very breastfeeding-friendly, and respectful of other decisions, such as deciding not to vax, though they are not his preference.
The only disappointment we have with him is that he does perform circumcisions, but he does not push parents either way- just accepts what they want.

Don't know if she's explicitly ANTI-circ, but most UC Davis docs seem pretty clued in. She did ask us if we were planning circ, but when we said no she explained about not retracting, washing like a finger, etc. So she at least knows what she's doing and doesn't offer up scare tactics or try to talk us into it. She's also bf friendly & willing to do selective/delayed vax and probably even no vax.
Dr. John Oberholtzer
Davis, CA
"Our pediatrician is Dr. John Oberholtzer - we live in Davis, CA. The phone number for pediatrics at Sutter Davis is 530-750-5959. Anyway, he's fantastic! Not only are his views inline with mine on circ, he is also very helpful when discussing anything and seems to share the same opinions as I do about a ton of parenting and health issues. My son has Sensory Integration Disorder (and quite possibly Aspergers or PDD-NOS) and he has been very helpful in getting us the referrals that we need to get him diagnosed and get the services he needs (and getting them covered by our insurance too!)"

He doesn't retract, and when we thought our LO might have a UTI, he never said anything about the fact that he was uncircumcised possibly being a cause. Another plus is that he is very crunchy himself -- he and his wife have 8 children who were all breastfed until age 2 or beyond, many were tandem-nursed, and they teach NFP classes together.

She never pressured us or anything when we didn't circ our son. At a couple of checkups she lifted his penis to look under it and checked his testicles, but most of the time, she just undid the diaper and took a quick look without touching anything. Never ever retracted DS at all or told us to or said that he should be retractable. We saw her from the time he was born until he was about 18 months (until we moved). Granted, we never had any problems, so we never got to see what her approach to those would be, but she clearly knew to leave the intact penis alone.

There are other physicians in this practice, but I do not know that they are foreskin friendly. This practice is very AP friendly in general. They "require" vaccines, but do allow selective and delayed vax.
They have evening, Saturday and Sunday hours as well.
Dr. Mogle told me, and I quote, "Don't worry about the foreskin till at least 8 or 9 years old." He also thanked me for leaving my son intact.
The doctors do not perform circumcisions. Dr. Stutzman said she has only referred out for a circ one time, ever, and that was for a child with severe problems. (She didn't elaborate.)

I lucked out finding a family doctor that's so great! He is supportive of not vaxing too!
Funny story of my first visit: My sister recommended him and she had her son circ'd so I assumed that his practice might not know about care for the intact penis, and I didn't want my son retracted. Before he came in, I told his nurse that my ds was intact and that his foreskin was not to be retracted. When Dr. Striebel came in he asked why I didn't want him retracted and who had told me not to do it, blah blah. Then he asked me who did his circumcision, I said nobody, he's intact. Then he said, "Oh, good, then we don't need to worry about it. Nothing needs to be done." I said, "Yeah, I know." He thought that ds had a "botched" circumcision, and that some extra care would be needed for that area to heal properly. I wonder what his nurse told him. I could totally see the relief on his face when I said my ds wasn't circ'd. That made me really happy.

A real rarity in non-metro Minnesota, she actually has an intact son herself - he is now in his 20's so she was really ahead of her time. Quite anti-circ, and really appreciates when parents of her patients make an informed choice. Takes her time during each appointment. Is pretty pro-vax, but very open to delayed scheduling (not sure how she would react to non-vaxing or selective schedule).

Dr Anna Suray is the best ped! I went through 2 other docs before I found her by accident when I moved back to Pittsburgh from WA.
I haven't met any of the other docs but she is at that office on Wednesdays and Thursdays and also her other office in W Virginia the rest of the week which isn't too far.
I don't know about her specific knowledge on the intact penis but she is certainly happy to follow my wishes and is pleasant about it!
She is also fine with me not vaxxing my kids and when I told her I would rather work with more natural ways to treat problems that may arise she thought it would be great for her to expand her knowledge in that area as well. Because of that I totally trust her when or if the time comes for us to have to use a different approach because she really talks to me about my options and is not pushy at all. I just love her!

Super, Duper crunchy practice. Love Them!
Editied to add - I now avoid appointments with Dr. Corpus. She recently (in the last year) received her medical lic. and got very, very upset with me when I asked for traditional medicine over the (expensive) homeopathics she prescribed for my son. (he ws hospitalized for RSV and pneumonia in December and I felt more comfortable taking a more aggressive approach with any illness that affects his breathing) The rx for amoxicillin she gave me was for the maximum recommended adult dose. It was a simple error on her part, and luckily the pharmacist noticed it the second I handed him the slip, but I will not see her again and do not recommend seeing her to anyone!

This doctor is anti-circ. He talks all his parents out of circ during prenatal interviews if they decide to circ he tells them that he can NOT be their doctor. He also give new parents a paper with the proper care and the development of the intact boy. He also happens to be a lactation consultant and promotes natural birth.
This doctor refuses circumcising and understands the development of the foreskin in great depth. He also educates other doctors about the normal development of the intact boy.

When I interviewed him about being our ped, I didn't know if I was having a boy or a girl. I wanted to ask him some questions (to see if he knew about not retracting the foreskin etc) so I started by saying "if this is a boy, we don't want to circumcise him." He said "that's a lucky boy."
He is also foreign born, from Eastern Europe. Which is probably one of the reasons he's not circ happy like a lot of peds in Texas.

"Unfortunately, while more and more parents are coming to understand that circumcision isn't a necessary medical procedure, many are unaware of what to do with their child's uncircumcised penis. And it does seem that one of the biggest problems that leads to children needing a circumcision later in life is improper care of their uncircumcised penis, with this improper care usually involves a parent being told to retract their child's foreskin before it is ready to be retracted. The best advice that a parent can follow is to simply 'leave it alone' and let a child retract and wash his penis once he discovers that it is retractable."

Wonderful ped, also happens to be completely ok with delayed vaxing (dunno about non-vaxing since we are still vaxing, just selectively and very delayed), and is definately anti circ. Another doc there, Dr. Woo, has also been good with my ds and although I dont know if she is anti circ, she knows how to take care of an intact penis and does not retract.
I would however, be cautious seeing an outside doc there for a penis related issue or with a newborn-some visiting doc tried to retract my son about a year ago.
