Ok ... this is NOT a poll to bash any preggie who posts that she's pregnant but hasn't kicked the ciggy habit! I'm really curious because I KNOW how hard it was at time to not enjoy a Camel when I was pg with Molly-Fae.

It's not uncommon for a pregnant woman to not quit ... even knowing the risk to her and her fetus. Here's an article I was reading just now, and that's why I decided to ask. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20700174/

If you were able to quit, do you have any advice for a mommy-to-be still struggling to not light up?

I smoked for a long time, even after I found out I was pregnant. Yes, I felt guilty as hell but with my stress level my doctor told me just to cut down to 5 a day & try to only smoke when I really felt stressed because it was better to calm me down than be so stressed that I stress out the baby as well... I've since quit. But, there are times when I do get high BP & stress out to a point where I almost hit panic attack mode & the only thing to calm me down & get back to normal is ONE cigarette. Since I quit on a regular basis I've smoked maybe 7 cigarettes. People around me just don't know/understand that stressing me out stresses my daughter out as well.

But, my tips are as follows :

When you get the urge to light up, try drinking water, chewing gum, or having a small snack. If it's more of a gotta have something in my hand type of need grab a pen or something of that nature & write down why you feel you "need" to smoke. I know sounds wierd but once you look at it in black & white it kinda hits home that you don't really need to smoke, if that makes any sense.

But, as my doctor told me once in a great while of lighting up is not as bad as what some other people have done. Because there are worse things you could do.

I hope this helps

Sarah! I'm glad you came out and said it A lot of mommies to be would probably not admit it ... I think I might be that way LOL But my VBFF when she was pg, had such troubles when pg before and so much stress, her dr actually recommended she not try to stop, but cut down on her habit instead, because he thought quitting would add way too much more stress to her life. So dont feel too guilty about it! Thanks for sharing tips on avoiding having a smoke when the urge comes too! Be sure to keep us posted on that growing belly of yours too!

Thank you Jamie I have no qualms about admitting that I smoked while PG, people have looked at me funny because of it & questioned it but once they realize that there is so many worse things I could have done they realize hey one cigarette at a stressful time is NOT that bad. & my girl friends know that when I ask for one I must be P.O.'ed etc. I will admit that there are times when I've tried to fight the urge & I've succeeded, but then there are the times like this passed weekend where it was just TOO much & going to the ER & being put in a darkroom told to lay on my left side & calm down for $396 again was just NOT worth it . Yeah I have insurance, but apparently it doesn't cover panic attacks.
I have heard of doctor's recommending the same advice that was recommended by your friend's doctor. The key is mainly cutting down, if you can do that you're fine!
Another thing to think about is waaay back in the day people drank voraciously & our grand parents are fine. & some of the things a lot of people were exposed to weren't exactly healthy. I.E. the lead paints of the past. I could go on, but I won't. LOL...
You're welcome for the tips, they do come in quite handy at times & have even worked for a few friends of mine that wanted to quit as it is.
I will keep you updated on Little Miss

Ok, heres a question that NO ONE on here ever asked me before and I NEVER voluteered it either. I have 6 kids ( yes SIX ) DD-18, DS-13, DS-9, DS-3 and the twins, DD & DD who are 2 months and I smoked with EVERY one of them ALL the way through my pregnancies. NO I'm NOT bragging, but I did and I TRIED quiting with them and I couldn't!! And yes, I STILL smoke now.

My OB always asked me everytime I went in for a visit IF I was still smoking and I was always honest with him ( that's just me ) Although he was not crazy about the idea and always told me the risks, he never got on me for it because he knew that I knew and that was that.

I wish I could've quit and I didn't and yes everytime I lit up I felt like crap. I really don't have any tips on how to quit while pregnant or not pregnant, cause it's one helluva habit to break!!!

She's been named, but we're not telling online until after she's born... we've only told a select few in our families, but it'll be announced to those that go to her baby shower.
After seeing that episode of Sex & the City where Charlotte's baby name was stole I decided to not say anything lol... I know that makes me sound weird, but my best friend stole the name I had picked for my daughter a LONG time ago & acted as though she'd invented it.

I smoked through my first pregnancy, I quit for maybe 6 weeks and started having problems anyway, on the way to the ER while I thought I was having a M/C I lit up again... and never was able to quit even knowing that the baby was OK. With this PG I had help quitting, DH And I both put them down and have been 6 weeks without! I think with the support from each other and our new SugarFree Dentyne addiction we will be good. at 45 a carton we are saving over 100 a week now.

Good for you Beth!!! Keep up the good work. I quit on 4/28/07 and haven't had one since. It took me two tries to quit when I found out I was pregnant, the second time worked. I was about 2 months along. Do you have quit keeper? I did one when I quit and it keeps track of all kinds of things. You download it on your computer then just open it whenever you want. Here are my stats now:

I have been quit for 10 Months, 2 Weeks, 1 Day, 15 hours, 2 minutes and 24 seconds (320 days). I have saved $1,603.12 by not smoking 8,015 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Weeks, 6 Days, 19 hours and 55 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 4/28/2007 7:30 PM

Hey guys! I am new to this board, but wanted to share my smoking/quitting experience. I had a m/c in Aug. I know there was no explination for it, that things just happened, but my guilt from not quitting with that preg. kept me feeling horrible, thinking that if I would have just done something differently, (like quit smoking) then maybe it wouldn't have happened. So this go around, that completely motivated me to stop. I don't even let my hubby smoke around me any more. I smoke only when I have to, probably 4 cigs since then and after smoking each time, those feelings come back again. My head tells me that just about every one of my friends have smoked while pregnant and that they have beautiful, healthy children. But my heart tells me I will not be able to live with myself if something I do causes harm to my sweet baby.

I know that's not the best way to quit...I wouldn't want to suggest anyone try to guilt themselves into quitting, but that's what has worked for me. And even though I KNOW that's not really why it happened, I do not try to talk myself out of it, cause hey - It's working! Bottom line for me - completely psychological. Hopefully I will lose the urge after the baby is born.

I smoked bout a pack a day, after I found out I was preg I cut down to a pack a week, after the first month cigarettes made me sick most of the time. So now I don't smoke at all but I do think about it. My hubby smokes still and I'll admit I still like the smell. I think for me what helped me quit was also psychological, I associate ciggs with throwing up and I think of how my man's fingers/breath smell after he smokes and it makes me sick. Plus with all the bad things my baby can be born with already I don't wanna add to the list. I know I'd blame myself if anything were to happen to my baby after birth cuz of my smoking.

I smoked before Lio and quit when I found out I was pregnant with him in Oct of 2006. After he was born I started smoking every so often but nothing regular and know that I am pregnant again I have had a couple cigarettes. When I was pregnant with Lio I gained almost 50 pounds and I attribute alot of that to not smoking cause the first 2 months of my pregnancy I gained like 15 pounds.
