Default Sharp Pain

Okay, so I woke up at 3:00am this morning to use the bathroom, my usual routine, I come back to lay down and I get this sharp pain in my lower right abdomen. At the time I was laying on my left side so I switch positions to my right side, still hurting...I ended up laying on my back and took me about 30 minutes to go back to bed. The pain went away and didn't come back...I don't know if I should be worried? I am expecting Twins and this pregnancy is sooooooo much more different than my first...I always have stomach cramping and the doctor said as long as I'm not bleeding I'm fine. But what should I do about sharp pains in the middle of the night?! Anyone have and information?

Thanks!

Default Re: Sharp Pain

Sorry just lurking. I too am having twins and experiencing the same thing. I did some research and also called my OB and she told me it is Round Ligament Pain. She said Round ligament pain refers to a type of pelvic pain caused by stretching of the round ligaments. This occurs more commonly on the right side of the pelvis. Your uterus is normally the size of a pear. Thick ligaments, one of which is called the round ligament, hold your uterus in suspension within your abdomen. As the uterus grows in size and weight, these ligaments become very long and thin, stressing and tensing like rubber bands. Even more so for women like us who are having twins or more. The ligaments pull and tug on nearby nerve fibers and sensitive structures, causing pain. The severity of pain can worry you. Although round ligament pain is uncomfortable, it is also very normal. So I was told.
A ligament spasm, an involuntary contraction or cramp, usually triggers a sharp pain. These spasms are found more frequently on the right side than the left because of the normal tendency of the uterus to turn to the right. You might awaken at night with pain after having suddenly rolled over in your sleep.
The pain may also be brought on by exercise. I was told to go to the ER if I had any of the following with the pain: Fever, chills, pain when uriniating or difficulty walking

I hope this eases your mind.
