Icon5 breastfeeding question

For those of you who have kids close in age, were you able to breastfeed? I just had my son on the 23rd and I have two daughters..3 1/2 and 1 (just turned 1 on the 7th of June) So my youngest are almost exactly a year apart. We have been breastfeeding successfully but I am afraid when DH goes back to work I am not going to have the time to do it anymore. Any tricks or advice on how to keep the 1 yr occupied while I feed my newborn?? Her older sister helps a little but she also has preschool 3 days a week...

This suggestion may not quite answer your question, but I hope it's useful anyway. If you happen to have some, get out photos of you breastfeeding the older kids. That way they are less likely to see it as special treatment for the baby that they are missing out on.

They probably will learn that you're less likely to come and discipline them while you're nursing (the same would apply to bottle feeding though) so maybe try to have something for them to do at feeding time. Best wishes.

I have breastfed 3 so far, and my kids are 17/18m apart. I guess I never really had any problems with them climbing on me etc, but they do tend to get into things, knowing I can't readily scold them You could try reading books while you nurse, that might help. Or turn on a DVD or something. My kids are pretty independent though, even at almost 16m my youngest keeps himself pretty occupied

Find a sling that fits well and you can chase one around the house while feeding the other. The sling was my saving grace =)

I am sad to say that when things got too crazy, I turned on the TV. It made my older kids super happy, though. It didn't happen often. I hope things are mostly easy for you.

Other things I did was to sing songs, ask questions, read books, give directions to do things. Our house always has toys out, so they would generally start playing. My kids were pretty good at playing and respecting when I needed them to settle down.
