Default Hospital based Doulas?

I read this article about Doulas. The author mentions "hospital based doulas". I always thought doulas are independent from any hospitals. I now did call some local hospitals that are on the list of our healthcare provider and one hospital indeed has doulas based out of their hospital. The rates for them is about 15% below what we would have to pay somewhere else. As we have to pay for a doula (it is not covered by the HI), the lower price is teasing us. The whole birth thing will cost us enough money anyway.

Has anyone here used a hospital based doula? What are your experiences? Were you happy with the attention and service you have received?

Thanks.

Tammy
