I recently scored an Eddie Bauer Hook-On Highchair for 75% off at Target. Since I was in the store when I came across it and it was the only one left I did not have time to do any research on the product before purchasing. I figured a portable highchair for $7.48 was a steal, however when I returned home with my purchase I looked on the Target website and found numerous reviews that didn't share the same feelings as I did about my new purchase. I read each of them prior to using the product with my twins but not letting the negativity of them form my opinion of the product.
Out of the box the product is easy to assemble, my husband had it put together and hooked onto our table in just a few minutes. At first glance the chair looks like it is well worth what I paid. In comparison to other hook-on seats I've seen and used this ones latching mechanism and increased leg room caught my attention immediately.
Putting it to the test, with one of my 14 month old twins who was well within the weight restrictions of the product. Sitting her in the seat is super easy because of the massive amount of leg room. Trying to fasten her in on the other hand was not so easy. The three-point harness that fastens between the legs is inconvenient. The middle harness that the lap belt secures to is not long enough. It forces the child to sit far back in the seat too far away from the table. To get closer to the table the lap belt has to secure to low and awkwardly around their hips and legs instead of lower midsection. Aside from the awkwardness of the safety restraint the actual use of the seat was perfect for our needs. It cleaned up easily with a dishcloth and hot soapy water after use. It folded flat and fits neatly into the trendy storage case included. It's lightweight, compact and could easily be taken along when going out to eat or to a family dinner. Overall I liked the versatility of the product and would recommend this product to others. I however would explain to them that in order to get the safety straps to work properly you should sit the child all the way to the back fasten the straps and then loosen the lap belt so that they can scoot forward closer to the table.
My final determination on the reviews by others on the Target website is that they were not using the seat within the means instructed by the manufacturer.
