I had my boy Friday morning at 2:52 am. His name is Declan John. He weighed in at 7 lbs 6 oz and 20.5 inches long. He is perfectly healthy
Here's the story:
Thursday I was feeling great. I was planning on being induced Saturday so I went to work for the last time. I worked from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am. and felt fine the whole shift. I work at a casino that is about 20 miles from my home and when I was about half way home my water broke in the car (at about 12:20 am) so I called my DH to get ready to leave as soon as I got home. I got home, changed my shirt and shoes and contractions were starting. DH called his mom to come over and get Jillian so she arrived at our house while I was changing clothes.
By the time we got in the car to go to the hospital it was about 12:50 am. We had a long drive ahead of us, the hospital I go to is in Dubuque and it usually takes at least 80 minutes to get there. I kept having stronger and stronger contractions that were about 4 min. apart. DH decided to call 911 and let them know that we were going to be speeding through and asked if we could get a police escort. No luck on the escort, they said there were no patrol cars in the area. At least it was late enough that there wasn't much traffic. We made it to the hospital in a little less than an hour. So it was about 1:45 when I got to the emergency room.
When I got to the delivery room it was after 2:00. I could barely move, the contractions were so bad. The nurse checked me and i was at 6 cm. I asked about the epidural and the nurse assured me the anesthesiologist was on his way. In the mean time things were just getting worse and worse. The nurse tried to get an IV in me but it didn't work. She tried 3 times and blew through the vein each time, she she had another nurse come in and was able to get one in on the inside of my elbow. It was about then that I felt like I had to push. The nurses told me not to push because the doctor wasn't in yet. I had a feeling that it was too late for the epidural and I was right
When the doctor showed up the baby was starting to crown so I pushed through 3 contractions and the baby was born. I couldn't believe I did it! Everything happened so fast.
I had 2nd degree tears and got stitched up, but other than the tearing and feeling all the pain and almost not making it in time, the delivery went well.
