Default natural birth v. epidural

Just wondering if anyone here has done either both or has had the epidural and can give me a little their opinion on the differences. i know that an epidural is suppose to ease some pain but im hoping to get some advice from someone who knows about them first hand through experience. i am thinking of having one this time because my first baby was on the larger side of the scale (9lbs12oz) and ive heard boys can be larger than girls and also 2nd babies can be larger. the hospital i went to last time was smaller and didnt offer epidurals so it wasnt even an option before, now that have a choice i want to at least learn more about it. im seriously thinking my son is going to be at least 11 pounds and i get scared thinking about my last birth experience which ended with 22 stitches and nothing to numb the pain a bit. any input would be great! Thanks
