I hate my neighbor, what can I do
I will apologize in advance sorry this is so long!
I know this it totally OT, but I am seriously ticked off right now. The so-called subdivision I live in is really just a dead end rural road, that is is not very wide, you have to pull off to the side to pass oncoming cars. There are only couple dozen houses on it, so the only traffic we get is that of people who live here and their visitors (and of course the mailman, trashmen etc.) This seems great b/c we can allow the kids to play in the front yard, or ride their bikes in the driveway since their isn't much traffic. Most of the people who live here are elderly people who have lived here most of their lives, with a few middle aged families mixed in. Although our children are the only ones who actually live on the North side of the road there is a sign right before our driveway that says "Slow Children at play" . About three houses down and across to road lives my enemy. I believe him to be around me & DH's age, but he acts very immature. He drives a newer mustang and apparently thinks he is a race car driver. The max speed limit I beleive is like 25 mph but he usually does at least 45 to 55 miles an hour. Once a few months back, he came flying down the road probably doing 70mph being followed a cop and was arrested. Not sure what for but it doesn't suprise me. He often comes flying down the road when my kids are in the yard or driveway and scares the crap out of me, anytime I see him coming down the road, (accelerating when he should be braking) I quickly grab my kids and hustle them inside. The kids are never out front w/o me and are usually in the back fenced yard but it really ticks me off, that I can't even take a walk w/ my dog and kids w/o worrynig if we are going to get run over. Anyhow so tonite I was in front letting my dog do his business and once again the punk comes flying down the road, I said, "it's not a race track" more to myself than him but apparently I said it loud enough for him to hear so he skidded into his driveway and when he got out started screaming a sleu of obscenities at me. WTF? It's not like I had screamed something nasty at him. Anyhow I really wanted to go punch him in his jerk face but obviously that was not a good idea so I just went inside. I am really mad and wondering if there is some legal grounds to report him on? Also we have been talking about putting a speed bump in, the road is not maintained by the county, so we have heard that we can do this but are not 100% we can, (anyone know). I really want to just put a big sign that says, "this is not a race track and you are NOT a race car driver, so slow the F down" but again not the best idea...LOL. I am just so frusterated, I wish they would just move already. I wonder if I can find out if they own the house or rent, and if they rent find out who the landlord is and complain to them? Any ideas how I would go about that? Or is that a bad idea too? What would you do?

Re: I hate my neighbor, what can I do
pretty sure you can contact the city and ask them to put in a speed bump, either that or you can hire a private contractor to put one in. I have no idea how much it costs but maybe you could put out flyers and ask that everyone pitch in. At least that way the speed demon will at least tear up his wheels when he speeds

It sounds like this guy has "issues"...sorry you have to deal with something like this.
To find out who owns the house, google your county name plus "property appraiser" and see if your county puts public records online. If so, you can easily do a record search from their site and it will tell you who owns the house, when they bought it, how much, etc.

I'd call the city and ask about putting that speed bump in. That would make me so mad too!

Re: I hate my neighbor, what can I do
We had a similiar problem last summer. I'll explain and then tell you what we did: We live in town but in the only portian that has one road in and one road out for about a group of 6 blocks. Kids love to drag race through here since it makes a fun L shape with a little wiggle in the middle. However we are the second to last house next to the stop sign and we are the only house with children besides the neighbor across the street whose kids are the same age.
First I called the city to ask for a speed bump, you can't have one put in a residential area here and I would have had to pay the $1000 for it and pay for the upkeep. They did say I could request a child at play sign that is yellow which means speeding tickets are double in that area. That we did. Then I contacted the police station and requested extra patrol (which they have to do if there is just cause) and they also told me that as a citisen, I could keep a log of liscense plates and after I had 3 accounts of activity, I could make a citisins arrest and have an officer speak with the people. I also did that. One such teenager's parents took away her liscence after being told by police what her daughter was caught doing by a neighbor and the parents made her come appologize to us too.
Since you know who he is, I would call police directly and tell them the situation, make sure your sign is yellow or orange so when he is caught speeding his fine (and points too) are double and find out if he rents or owns. I doubt talking to him will work, he sounds a tad bit hostile to me! Good luck!

Re: I hate my neighbor, what can I do
What an A$$ I would so be all over his butt!! Call the police and report his driving and speeding. It's apparent from the they know this guy!! I would also see about getting a sign up! Speed bumps don't prevent speeding always, in his case he just might try to go around it and end up in one of your front rooms!
One thing a neighbor of ours did in CA was put peagravel on the road. The minor nicks that it can cause from speeding might just deter him from speeding if he loves his car that much!!
I am actually a former racecar driver (SCCA Solo I and II), city streets are no place for speeding.
If you need help finding out if he owns or rents let me know. I'm a real estate agent and have access to a national database of public records.

Re: I hate my neighbor, what can I do
My suggestion is to pray about it. Prayer really works and I've prayed about situations before that I felt that I could do nothing about and the Lord would move on my behalf.
I know it is very annoying. We moved to a large subdivision in December (after being in the country for 6 years) and we live on the main entrance road. I do not allow my children to play in the fron at all but we do have a large fenced in back yard. There are a lot of kids in this neighborhood and they are out riding their bikes and stuff all over the place and it makes me nervous. We go for a walk in the evenings and we are always worried about cars because some idiots don't know how to drive slow in a neighborhood. We are moving back to our old house in the country though.

Re: I hate my neighbor, what can I do
Don't forget, a video camera is a great way to get evidence of his poor driving. If you know his schedule, have it handy and when he speeds by, make sure you can get a close up of his license plates.
We have a few of those where we live--they drive "tuner" cars (Hondas with big stupid exhaust tips, basically) and they like to speed past our house where the speed limit is 15 mph. They go at least 45 mph. Our yard is not large, and while I sit outside with my children, I'm always afraid of the potential a speeding car has. I don't know why they do it, because they certainly don't get to their home much faster. Fortunately for us, we live on a military base, and all I have to do is call the police on base and report the car and plates, and they are hit with a ticket. Then they have to report it to their shirt, and they get chewed out. I've busted a few of these guys. They're just punks, that's all.
I have a luxury car and a race car. My Z28 puts out over 400 hp with what my husband and I have done to it. We do not feel the need to show off our car. The only place it is raced is on a track with the proper safety gear. I guess it's all about maturity and respect, you know?
Maybe you should put out a big sign that says "Mustangs are slow!" LOL
