My 6 year old is being raised by me and her father (who is never around and it's more like his mom). His mom spoiles her nonstop so today when I went to the store to get a cooler for work she of course expected to get 100 toys.

I let her pick out a pack of markers and some small toy. We were waiting in line when some little girl and her mom came up behind us. this girl had a huge art kit with tons of markers. My daughter started whining about how the childs markers are better than hers. I explained that my daughter picked out the markers and she is to have them. She kept telling me she's angry, she doesn't want them they're stupid and so I took them out of the cart and said "If you don't want them and they aren't good enough you don't get them." Immediately she started crying and to make it worse the woman behind me scoffed and rolled her eyes at me like I was a lunatic.

I thought it was the right thing to do right?

Well, my daughter, once we got home, started punching herself in the head! She called herself stupid and I explained to her she should appreciate what she has because I work hard. She said she can't wait to go to Daddys later (which really equals gramas) and is just sulking in her room. Does my discipline have no bearing? Also, WHAT is wrong with parents? The woman behind us made it worse!
