Mariah,

I am soooo glad you asked this. I have wondered and we have joked that I have "bags of steel". I worry about it with this one since I'll be teaching until I go into labor.

With my 1st, my bag did have a tear in it. I asked my dr. about it at my appt about 10 days before my due date and he basically said I was crazy and it wasn't my water. Well, it kept leaking for another day and got worse so I called. I went to l&d and they told me it wasn't leaking. FINALLY, a doc came in and did the fern test and it was indeed leaking. They broke the bag and induced me. I was so mad that no one believed me.

With my 2nd, my water didn't break until I was at 10 cm. It then broke and I delivered 15 minutes later.

With my 3rd, I arrived at the hospital at 5+ cm with a "bulging bag of water". My water didn't end up breaking until 10 cm *AGAIN* and 10 minutes later, I delivered.

I have wondered if I am just a "break at 10 cm and have the baby" person. I worry that it will break at school and then I don't have time to make it to the hospital. So, thank you for sharing that yours broke earlier the 2nd time. I forgot to ask my dr. about this at my last appt but will for sure ask in a couple weeks when I go back.

I wished they would have broken it with my 3rd instead of sitting around waiting, but it wasn't convenient for the dr. I think I'll insist they break it this time as soon as I get to the hospital.

Nope, never had the pleasure. The mw has always broken it for me. Actually with DD#3 she broke it just before she crowned since it wasn't breaking on its own. Ellie had a tiny little scratch on her scalp from the tool they used.

I think I will ask the mw too next week.

Mine broke on its own about 9 hours after I got to the hospital - I think I was about 5cm. My Dr had left the room to get the thing to break it herself but sure enough I was lying there and had a huge gush - such an odd feeling! I always wonder what it'll be like this time and if it'll happen at the start of labor or in the middle again!

With 1st, water was leaking for my entire three days of labor....a slow leak. I was a week late.

With my 2nd, I was a week late, and water broke and gushed...and continued to gush until I got to the hospital (15 min away) and I delivered only an hour or so later. I had walked for 5 hours that day at an amusement park and after I got home, put on my jammies, and made a bowl of ice cream...is when it broke!!! No, I did not get to eat the ice cream!

With this baby, I'm already walking 2 hours a day. When I get to 36 weeks (in mid August) I plan to start walking 3-4 hours a day. Yes, my knees will hate me!

My advice, start walking vigorously from 36-37 weeks on. As much as you can. I firmly believe exercise (especially walking) gets labor started and can also help your water break. It will also help you efface and dialate prior to labor so labor is easier. Studies have shown that the more you exercise during your pregnancy the easier your labor will be.

Yuppers... We were leisurely lying in bed on a Sunday morning, when whoosh...it was show time. I showered and then went to the hospital. Contractions started en route. It was 11 days prior to due date.

I was another one of those "in the movies" water breakers. I was coaching a softball game at 37 weeks with my son when I felt the Pop and Gush. And it gushed and gushed and gushed - my camp chair I had been sitting in was FULL and then it started running down the dugout onto the field! Hindsight it's kind of scary cause my son was not engaged at all and now I think how lucky I am that his cord didn't prolapse labor never did start and I had to be induced the next day..... With my daughter I got to the hosp with contractions and was 7 cm dialated. I had gbs so I had to lay around till the antibiotics kicked in. I didn't progress at all in 4 hrs then she checked me and accidentaly broke my waters and the contracts were WAY worse, but went quickly after that.....
