Default Has this ever happened to anyone here?

There is this young woman at church...I'm sure she's in her early 20s or so. She had a baby boy on April 23rd. I don't know her very well, just an aquaintance.

I went to a baby shower for a couple friends of mine last weekend, and she was there with her little boy.

He is still soooo tiny.

When I asked her how much he weighed at birth, she said 8 pounds. I asked her how much he weighs now, she said 8 pounds.

I didn't ask any more questions since I'm sure it's a sort subject for her as a new mom. I don't know if she tried breastfeeding and it just didn't work for her or what. I noticed that she was feeding him formula...so hopefully that is going to get him some of the nutrients that he needs.

He just looks kinda sickly, but has no health problems besides failure to thrive.

I had issues with my first not gaining. They ended up having me go to the Dr with her every week for the first couple of months and in the end they just said she was petit and would likely always be this way and she is! It's hard to say sonetimes it's poor care other times genetics like in my first childs case. To date she is almost 9 and barely fits in a size 7. She is however super healthy and rarely gets sick. I hope her little one is okay.

Hi, lurking in "New Posts"...

My SIL's 4th child was like that. She was feeding him homemade formula from veggie and fruit juice for the first couple months, and at 6 weeks he couldn't even hold his head up. They dont take their kids to the Dr, so I dont know how much he weighed at that point, but he looked awful. At one point they started him on Soy formula (not sure if someone said something to her or not) and now he's a big porker and doing well! Hopefully that little guy will put on some weight soon! Maybe she had issues, like you said, those newborns are tricky with that weight gaining thing, even when you aren't doing weird stuff like my SIL.

bear in mind the formula she is giving him could be a higher calorie formula... that is designed for situations like that...

Sometime babies are like that.. My husband was at 11 days old he had to have surgery.. they fought for years to get his weight up..

heck at 34 he's 6' and 140 ( he was 115 when I met him..)

I just hope he starts putting on the weight. I didn't want to ask many questions, cause I'm sure it is pretty emotional to not have your child thriving the way he should.

Its a tough one alright. I do find it hard not to say anything in those situations to be honest, I'm normally saying something or biting my tongue very hard..

When she answered both of my questions, I was like...oh okay and walked away. She's probably answered those questions so much, that she is tired of it. She and her mom are not little people either...so for this little guy to be so tiny, is definitely not taking after the family.

Hi, lurking from dis.

Hopefully its just genetics. My first two were breastfed and doubled their birthweight by the first month, and continued to be huge, chunky babies (everyone joked that they were bigger than me). They were with my first husband. I then remarried, had a 3rd baby and she ended up being the largest one at birth, but didn't double her birthweight until much much later, and has still been pretty small. I did everything the same and she was bfed the longest too.

So, hopefully just genetics had a big part in her baby being small.

failure to thrive could be a lot of things. my dd was a failure to thrive baby because of a heart defect and she didn't gain like she should have in those first 8 weeks. after her surgery she went up, but on the curve that was much lower than normal kids. She is perfectly healthy now.

If the child has an illness, she could be doing everything possibly to get calories in him but if he refuses or cannot eat much he obviously won't put on weight.

DH's cousin, she lives nest door to us, has a little boy who turned 1 May 9th. He's only 17lbs, and I have no clue how tall.. super short. He's still in 9 months clothes. The Dr's were a little concerned and she was to. She's been feding him Ensure (per her Peds orders), not sure if it's helping. Both parents are pretty average, so.. it's hard to say if it's genetics or not.

My sister and I are kinda worried that he may acually have some form of dwarfism. I would NEVER say that to the mom... but it's in the back of my mind. He's healthy... just really really small. No one believes that he's almost 14 months old.

As for the gal at your church....I hope her little one is okay. I have never heard of a baby being that tiny at that age. Ashy was born April 23rd, and by July she was well above her birth weight, and she's a pretty petite chica.
