Why did I promise....
...to use my MIL's name in our baby's name if we ever had another girl? I never told her that I would, but said it in my heart when we named Ava (who has my mother's middle name as part of her middle name). My MIL 2 years ago (although she loved Ava's name) made the comment that she doubted anyone would ever want to name a baby after her. Her name is Christine (no middle name). It just broke my heart - even though I'm not fond of her name, I purposed then and there, if we ever had another little girl, I would honor her by at least giving the child that as a middle name or a dirivitive of the name Christine somewhere in the name. Sadly, every person I know who has a similar name, has either been a problem child I've had in school, or just a person that has had major problems in life. Needless to say, the Christine middle name is leaving me really strapped for choices of first names that DH and I can agree on or that flow well. I don't want to go back on my promise, but I also don't want to have to settle for a first name that either might not suit my baby or that I really don't care for, just because it's the only thing I could come up with that went with Christine. The only person - other than you ladies - that I've told about using Christine, is of course DH (and now I could probably kick myself for saying it outloud).
Ok here are the names I have come up with - none of which DH is fond of other than Emily (but we all know how many Emilies will be running around the world in the next 100 years ).
Emma
Hannah
Jenna (This is the name we were always going to name our first little girl - but didn't.)
Lauren
Lily
Emily
Leah (This is the name that popped in my head when I got my )
Sydney
Jordyn
Ryann (I really like this one.)
Thanks for any other suggestions or ideas for an alternative to Christine - other than Christian (that's a whole different teacher story LOL). Oh and I'm really avoiding having 2 C names.

Re: Why did I promise....
I used to be friends with a girl named Marie Christine and she went by Christine.
Is Christina a possibility? It might flow better and it isn't EXACTLY Christine LOL (By the way- my one grandma's name is Frances and I am NOT named after her despite my name similarity.)
Emma
Hannah
Jenna (This is the name we were always going to name our first little girl - but didn't.)
Lauren
Lily
Emily
Leah (This is the name that popped in my head when I got my )
Sydney
Jordyn
Ryann (I really like this one.
I think all of those work well with Christine. Jordyn (same spelling- is one of my really good friend's dd's name!)
I like Jenna, Sydney, Jordyn, and Ryann. I know WAY too many Hannahs, Lilys and Emmas. Hannah does mean God's grace though I think...neat name! I used to like it alot but now there are so many...almost as many Emilys!

The day you deliver, outside will be warm. Your baby will arrive in the evening. After a labor lasting approximately 5 hours, your child, a girl, will be born. Your baby will weigh about 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and will be 17-1/2 inches long. This child will have blue eyes and dark hair.

Re: Why did I promise....
I was thinking Christina too. Even spelling it with a K.
Kristen
Kjerstin
All of the Christine's I know are shy and quiet. Christina's on the other hand are while and adventurous.
You otherwise have a great list there. Good luck.

Re: Why did I promise....
Hey! I am Julie Christine and my DD is Emily Christine.
I am not named after anyone, but do love my middle name. And, for the record, I have had a happy, normal life and like to consider myself a well-adjusted person. ... if I can help rock the boat to the other side.
As for Emily being so popular, I am right there with you. I love the name Emily and I do love it on my little girl, but - because of the popularity of it - I sometimes wish we had gone another direction. In high school, I had a graduating class of 136 and I was one of five Julie's. I swore I'd never pick a popular name for my kids. Whoops!
We are now focusing on boy names and I love the name Jacob, but I nixed it off the list when I saw how popular it has been in the past 5 years! Back to the drawing board!

That is neat! The main reason I lean a little toward Emily in spite of its popularity is that it sounds so lighthearted to balance the more classic serious Christine.
As for the boy name you are tossing around. Jacob was our boy name, but then I thought of Joshua - because on my side my mother would have had 3 grandsons named - JC, Jace, and then Jacob/Jake. LOL That's why we switched to Joshua - who would have gone by Josh. Just a thought for you.

Re: Why did I promise....
I have to say that I like Emily too. A long time ago- before I was even thinking about kids, really, it was on my list of favorites. It's a good name...Emily Christine...it does sound nice together!
But I liked the other names on your list as well.

Re: Why did I promise....
Naming is (or can be!) so frustrating! I'm right there with ya! And I know it doesn't help when you have bad associations to contend with. I love the name Annalie for a little girl, but doubt we'd use it since I have a really horrid SIL named Annie. I also have a cousin living nearby with a DD named Anna who is just a year older than my Kiley...so it's probably too close.
I know an old friend's sister named her DD Emilie Christine. Why I remember that, I don't know? There was also a mom on Ellie's old board who had an Emily and an Ava. I seriously don't know why I know this, but I think two of Martina McBride's DDs are Emma and Ava. Those two sound really cute together if the commonality isn't an issue.
I grew up and went to school with the sweetest girl, Jenna. It seemed odd to me to name my DD that, but I love the name and had a great association, so Ellie's formal name is Isabelle Jenna Faith. Jenna Christine flows well. I've played with using Lily and Leah, too...but I do agree that Lily is very, very popular now. (In my case, I think it might sound a little too close to Kiley and Ellie as well.) It is very pretty with Ava though.
As for the MN, what about taking the E off of the end and using the softer sounding Christin? Or Christa might work with some of the "Y" or "N" ending first names?
Don't know if I'm much help...but I sure do know how difficult naming can be. I should do a thread, too...but don't know if I will due to bad past experiences when doing them on boards before. (I know you all are great, but being a public board...well...you know... )
Good luck!!!

Re: Why did I promise....
Well I only know 2 Christines in my life, but they are some of the most beautiful, wonderful people I know.
What about Kristianna or something along those lines.
I think Christine (or any of the variations) are great as middle names and your reason behind wanting to use a variation of your MIL's name is beautiful to me.
Plus, how often do you use your middle name? The first name is what you say all the time.

Around here your middle name is your hint that your tail is in BIG trouble! (Getting called out by your full name - first middle and last!)

Re: Why did I promise....
LOL We also use middle names to signify that the kids are in trouble!
I like that you want to use mil's name and the reason why and like the idea of not using her exact name but a form of it like
Christin
Christa
Christina
Christy
Chrisy
even just plain old Chris may work well
Hannah
Jenna
Lily
Emily
Leah
Sydney
Jordyn
Ryann
Devyn
Jailynn or Kailynn
are all cute names!!!!

Same here! Also as a way to really get their attention even when not in trouble. My mom did the same with me. She always called me 'sis' when I was upset or not feeling good - a comfort thing. My grandma did, too (and called my mom that when she was a girl).

Lurker
Krista
Kristine
Kirstie
Chrisa
Another idea is to take the meaning of Christine and choose another name with the same meaning...not sure how she'd react to that idea, but it is the same general idea (passing the meaning of the name instead of the name itself) and you may be able to get a name you like too.

Re: Why did I promise....
I think Emily Christine sounds pretty. I agree with the pp. You could always use a variation of Christine. Your DH should compromise! If he wants to use Christine as a middle name, then you get to pick the first name. If he won't agree on a first name, then you have the right to change the middle name.
Good luck to you! I hope you find a name you both like. I know it's frustrating.

It's really not him (with regard to keeping the middle name) it's me feeling bad for feeling like I would be going back on my word (although it wasn't a spoken word, except to DH and then only recently). As for a variation on Christine, most of them I've had bad experiences with students as a classroom teacher - that leave a bad taste in my mouth for using them instead. I'm sure we will eventually come up with something. I'm going to keep pushing my list, and if he doesn't come around, then I'm going to tell him, that the only other option is to drop his mom's name so that I can have a name I like and he can pick another middle name.
Thanks again for all the input.

Re: Why did I promise....
I just wanted to say Melissa- you could do your names on the private board.
Shannon- I know I mentioned Christian for a boy name and I am not sure if you like the name- but there is a girl in Keiran's class named Kristian- pronounced like Christian. So it is at least similar to Christine but not exactly... but I think the other names and spellings might work better.
Like Christianna or just Kristine or Christine... the three syllable might not work as well with alot of names... How about Peyton? Peyton Christine
I know you'll find a name that both of you can agree on. It's really hard but somehow, our kids always get names, right? It's really hard when you are pregnant too- I fussed over Breylan's name...I don't remember when I found it- it was after 32 weeks I think. We didn't really have a name for him and it drove me CRAZY. I felt like "baby" didn't help me bond. I know it sounds odd, because lots of people don't find out until the birth and they bond. LOL So. We had two names picked, and I didn't know what he'd end up with until I actually saw him. But at least I felt better, having a name or two that both of us liked and could live with. I am sure you will find a prefect name for your new daughter.
