Default What kind of bottles are you going to use?

I used Avent with my first and hated them. They leaked all of the time.
I am going to throw them all out and start new this time.
I am planning on buying Dr. Browns.
Do you have good or bad things to say about Dr Brown bottles?
What kind are you going to use?

With #1 I used PLaytex Ventaires. WIth #2, it was Evenflo Comfi (they only bottle and nipples he would take).
This time we will try the Comfi ones again, maybe try a couple of the Brown's one. I like those (Comfi) a lot better than the Ventaires.

the ones that come at the end of my boobies LOL. Seriously though - Ava didn't learn how to nurse until she was 2 months old so I had to pump and then bottle feed her. We used Playtex Nursers with the drop ins and I loved those. So convenient!!

Have you guys heard of the "bad" plastic? some bottles like Dr. Browns uses a kind of plastic that emits toxins into the milk. If I can find a list, I'll post it.

There are good plastic bottles; one of them being "born free". I personally am going to use gerber glass nursers and I'm looking around for silicone nipples to use with them. I am buying some "born free" for daycare (in case they drop them).

Yeah I heard about that, but I really don't care (I do but don't-kwim). I see no probs, my boys are fine. Everything these days seem to have toxins in them.

If I remember correctly, hand washing the bottles is fine, its when you machine wash/boil to sanitize them and put them in microwaves that make them dangerous. But I could be wrong so don't take my word on it.

I thought that was all the bottles like playtex, gerber, etc.

I don't use bottles really so I am of no help. Sorry!

The day you deliver, outside will be warm. Your baby will arrive in the evening. After a labor lasting approximately 5 hours, your child, a girl, will be born. Your baby will weigh about 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and will be 17-1/2 inches long. This child will have blue eyes and dark hair.

Dr Browns are the BEST of all the bottles and we tried them ALL with DD. I pumped & supplemented.
I am concerned about the BPA in the bottles but their website says they are working on a new line & I'm actually planning on calling them and finding out when they project they will be in stores because I will hold off on buying bottles until closer to the birth if they will be out in time.
I have to say, that these bottles are so good, that I will still use them regardless (and I am a health nut)!

We learned the hard way with Katie not to stock up on bottles. She had a horrible suck so had to try 5 different bottles before we found on that worked! This time, if BF doesn't work out I'll buy one or two bottles and not the whole set! lol!
I'm leaning toward the Playtex Advantage because I think they are cute...lmao!

Here are the articles. My kid isn't okay. So, I don't know if it matters to anyone else.

Groups Warn Baby Bottles Leach Toxic Substance
PDF type file

IMO, there are a lot of toxins out there but I'm doing my best to avoid them this time around.

Forgot to add that I used Dr. Brown's bottles last time and loved them but they were a bit of trouble to clean due to so many parts. And I bet if one replaced the bottles and nipples after a couple of months, they would be just fine to use.

We're going to get a couple of these to try.

One Step Ahead Baby - Adiri Natural Nurser

They're a little pricey, but we tried almost every type of bottle with Lina just so I could pump and someone else could feed her if necessary....yeah, right. I think she only took a bottle twice for like 5 minutes. So, I figured this is the most "booby" like bottle I can find. As a plus for those that are concerned, it says it's polycarbonate-free. Which basically means, it shouldn't have BPA in it. To quote from the link in emuone's post: "BPA, a synthetic sex hormone that mimics estrogen, is used to make hard polycarbonate plastic."

They have overall great reviews by moms that experienced the same thing. I always wanted to try these with Lina, but never got around to it. Go figure, lol.

Wow!
In addition to baby bottles, BPA is used to make hard plastic used in some toddler sippy cups, polycarbonate water bottles such as some Nalgene bottles, dental sealants, and the linings of many food and beverage cans, including all infant formulas.
Sounds to me like the problem is way to widespread to be avoided. If you tried to avoid everything that has this stuff in it, then you'd drive yourself crazy. What I get from the article is that the leaching of the harmful substance only occurs in large amounts when the plastic is heated.

As for bottles, I have always used Playtex Nursers with the drop in liners. My babies in the past have all only liked the flat nipples though and they aren't easy to find anymore. I had thought of using the Avent bottles, but now I'm not sure, after hearing about the leakage problem. I guess if I try them and have that problem, we'll be going back to the nursers. Maybe this little one won't be so picky about the nipple. Of course we are planning on BFing, but I will still need something for water and juice till the nursing plays out.

Well, true, you can't avoid every toxin. But to cut down on it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm not paranoid about these things, but I will do things like delay vaccinations, buy an organically filled baby mattress, buy glass bottles.

I totally didn't mean to start anything (Sorry!!) I think the bottles MTL are way cool!

I didn't have any problems with the Advantage bottles leaking...is that a common problem?

After a little research on the Babies R Us website and reading peoples comments i found out that the Nuby bottles are PBA free and they are fairly cheap. Some did suggest not to use them until your child is a few months old due to the fat flow from the nipples.
Also the playtex drop ins sound like a good idea and good for infants.
Thanks for the information about the PBA free bottles. Anything to keep my children safe or safer helps.

Kinda but not really go with this...(old thread I posted months ago on a different board). But keep in mind that it means long term, many years and non-stop exposure. And all plastic have sometype of toxin. So in all, 'the presence of a chemical does not necessarily mean it poses a health risk'.
----------------------------
A new study suggests that "toxic" chemicals used in the materials to make car seats can put children in danger of developing health problems if ingested or inhaled.

'These chemicals can be associated with developmental disorders, learning impairment, liver disease, cancer, as well as other allergic type diseases.'—Jeff Gearhart, Ecology Center
The study, released Wednesday by the Michigan-based environmental group Ecology Center, provides analysis of more than 60 different car seat models for chemicals including bromine, chlorine and lead.

"These chemicals can be associated with developmental disorders, learning impairment, liver disease, cancer, as well as other allergic type diseases," said Jeff Gearhart, lead author of the report.

"This report shows that the same toxic chemicals that are used to make interior auto components are also used to make child car seats," the report said.

Car seat manufacturer Graco, whose TurboBooster Emily and TurboBooster SafeSeat were named in the report as having high concentrations of chemicals in the booster seat category, said they are currently examining the study's methodology and findings.

"At Graco, we take claims such as this very seriously," the company said in a statement. "Safety is always a top priority and nothing is more important than the well-being of the children who use our products."

The company Britax, whose Marathon Platinum seat was found to have the highest levels of chemicals in the convertible car seat category, did not return calls.

The Michigan-based environmental group Ecology Center has released a study analyzing more than 60 different car seat models for chemicals including bromine, chlorine, and lead.
(CBC) Health Canada, which evaluates the use and safety of chemicals used in products sold in Canada, said in a statement on car seat safety that the presence of a chemical does not necessarily mean it poses a health risk.

Keep window ajar, car seat out of sunlight: report
Gearhart recommends that owners of car seats that tested poorly should keep the window ajar when travelling in the car. He also says the seat should be kept out of direct sunlight and use of the product should be restricted to use in the car.

"We do recommend that you limit the time your child spends in the car seat," he said. "It should be used exclusively in the vehicle, and not used to transport your baby outside the vehicle."

The authors of the report caution that parents should always use a car seat, despite the presence of potentially harmful chemicals.

In March, the Ecology Center released a report saying that plastics and materials used inside the car, from the steering wheel to the dashboard to the carpets — can expel gas or leach into the environment.

We used the playtex nursers with the drop in ...i agree very convient. When Logan got a bit older we used the avent ones, never had a leakage problem either, but Logan didnt like the nipple that much....although he didnt like ANY nipple...he's always been a very picky eater right fom day one.

I used Dr. Browns in the beginning due to spillage and then went to avent too. She uses them all. This time around I'm going the same route.

I'm not going to get too crazy about the plastic toxins though. I tease my husband that I'm more concerend about our microwave. HA! That one is way too weird of an invention. Heating up things without fire.. that's crazy!

Mine have all been breastfed babies who didn't like bottles, with the exception of Spencer who decided he'd take them occasionally for Daddy or a sitter (I had class a couple mornings or evenings per week) at nine months old. The only ones we ever had any success with were Playtex with disposable liners (I like drop-in best, but have used the others) and the natural, "most like mom" nipples. My kids hated the Avent ones.
