Re: What else do we need for baby?
Looks like you got everything needed in the first week or so. Most they do at that time is eat, sleep, and poop.

Re: What else do we need for baby?
If you are intent on bf'ing, you should have a manual or electric breast pump - or be prepared to rent one from the hospital. That way you don't have to do the formula
Also a bouncy seat or something like that - a moses basket would also work. That way the baby is portable around the house while it's sleeping.

Re: What else do we need for baby?
I always say lots of extra bfing pads for your bra, & Lanolin cream!
easy to change cloths, in case of blow outs
lots of Cold water
someone to rub your feet
nail clippers or mittens so baby can't scratch that cute little face
sockies
nursing pillow
Pain reliefe for you JIC
calming music for you and baby around fussy time
maybe even some gas reliefe for baby and a stool softener for you
and I have to have a bassinett in my room and in the front room so that Xander doesn't crawl on her in the baby seat I got for her. LOL
Something special for Sadie so she can feel involved in the care of the baby too, or someone to help with the baby so that Sadie gets some alone time with mom and dad.

Re: What else do we need for baby?
I used a bouncy seat right away. I also used a portable bassinet (like a moses basket) constantly. Each within a week. Definitely a nursing pillow and be sure you have different kinds of pads and brand new underwear.

Re: What else do we need for baby?
Tucks Pads - I ran out of the ones from the hospital last time and had to send dh on an emergency run for those - and also for the giant period pads, the super extra absorbant ones. My girly parts really hurt afterwards and the tucks pads were such a relief

Re: What else do we need for baby?
that is a great suggestion! I don't think of things like pain down there because I am a c-sec mommie but the tucks are great either way to help keep clean and lots of ultra absorbant pads and undies you can throw away!

bottles, formula in case breastfeeding doesnt work
|
I'm sorry for getting off topic, but I just want to say, if you are pretty sure you want to breastfeed, I wouldn't have ANY formula in the house for the first few weeks. I've breastfed three of my babies and bottlefed one. So I've done both. Breastfeeding can be rough at the beginning. I switched to bottles on the 4th day after my second child was born after a sleepless night where I couldn't get him to latch on all night long. With my 3rd baby, I had a couple of weeks of bleeding sore nipples and muscle pain. With my 4th baby, I had a repeat of sleepless nights for a couple of nights because I couldn't get Dylan to latch on. One of the main things that kept me from giving up on breastfeeding my 3rd and 4th babies like I did with my second was the fact that I had no formula in the house and did not let myself go buy any. And I ended up being glad because for me, breastfeeding got a lot easier after a few weeks and ended up being a special experience.
But anyway, that wasn't the point of your post so I'm sorry for digressing. Here's what I think I'll need for the first few weeks-
-onesies- a big stash of them
-one piece light weight sleepers
-a few of those swaddle-wraps ( a lot easier to swaddle baby than just using a receiving blanket)
-baby tub and mild baby wash
-swing
-sling
-bouncy seat (one that vibrates)
-co-sleeper crib
-diapers and wipes
-newborn pacifiers
There's probably some really obvious stuff that I'm forgetting. I haven't started organizing any of my stuff yet.

Re: What else do we need for baby?
I wanted to ask what are the tucks pads for?
I had a lot of stiches after my first baby and couldnt sit down for a while. I also remembering wearing pads for weeks. I liked the thinner but large size ones.
I love the moses basket idea. I am definately going to get one.
I do have a breastfeeding box for Sadie with some marker games, puzzle, and an aquadoodle in it.

They help with the tight stitches and the inflamation much like they do with hemorhoids.

I couldn't agree more! You can always go out and get formula if it really becomes necessary, but having it on hand can really undermine your efforts.
I also have to second the variety of nursing pads--LOTS of them (but nothing with a plastic backing, which promotes yeast growth) and having Lansinoh lanolin on hand. Also good would be a reliable, reputable breastfeeding book to refer to if you need a little guidance, and the number to the local LLL or lactation nurse at the hospital if you need more guidance. Breastfeeding is natural, of course, but natural does not equal easy. Give yourself some time to succeed before you go sabotaging yourself!!
I also keep a lot of those big, honking pads and witch hazel around. If you are very sore (especially if you have a tear or some stitches), you can freeze pads soaked in witch hazel-- it is VERY soothing. You can also fill a ziploc bag 2/3 full of water and add about 1/4 c rubbing alcohol and freeze. The alcohol will keep it from freezing solid, so it'll be more comfortable to sit on.... just remember to put a washcloth or something between your sensitive areas and anything frozen!!
I guess my big list for baby's first week probably looks something like this:
-Boobs
-Nursing bras and pads
-Boppy pillow or similar
-Heiny-care items for myself (mentioned above)
-24 diapers, 5 covers, snappis, and detergent for washing
-Simple clothing for baby
-Sling of some sort (keeps older kids from bothering sleeping baby!)
-Lots of water (for mom)

Re: What else do we need for baby?
I had a C-section with DS and I remember the using the tucks pads. I can't remember if it was for hemroids or if I was irritated down there from the bleeding, (I was shocked at how much I bled even after having a CS!!!).... but either way they where good to have on hand.
I need to add those to my list of stuff to get.
Also with the formula, I was considering having a small container on hand this time JIC but now that you all have commented I agree too, I gave up breastfeeding with my son after only two weeks, right from the begining in the hospital the nurses were not very encouraging. They said DS was too big and couldn't get enough from me, so when it got tough at night to BF I just gave up and made formula. This time my new doctor said he would do everything he could to support me and help me with BF.
