Default midwife appt yesterday, and i have a question...

the appt was good, uneventful but good. BP is great, urine is fine, babys heartbeat was 135...the lowest its ever been. by belly is measureing right on track...no internal, which is alwasy nice. I go back in 3 weeks. Usually it would be 2 weeks, but since there are no concerns for the baby or mines health, she pushed it to 3 weeks.

My question is would you ever not take the gestational diabetes test??...my midwife gave me the form but she said its up to me if i want to take it or not. She says there is a lot of conflict if every preganant woman should be tested for it, or if only the ones with "red flags" should be. According to her the red flags are:
1) if your over 25 (im 23)
2) if you've had a baby over 9 lbs before (logan was 8lbs 14oz)
3) if type 2 diabetes runs in you family (my paternal grandpa was recently diagonased with type 2)

So i have 1 of the red flags...almost 2 (2oz away from 9 lbs baby) I think i will take the test, Im sure im fine, but if i dont take it i'd feel horribly guilty if i did have it, then this baby could have issues when its born. My midwife also said she is totally fine with whatever decission i make. I wasnt expecting to have to make this decission, i just assumed everyone got tested

I would take the test just to be safe.

I can't think of a reason that you wouldn't take the test - if it was potentially harmful to you or the baby I would be hesitant but this is a very standard, perfectly safe, painless test. I say go for it.

i don't do the test. It's notoriously inaccurate for one thing, plus it's just yucky and inconvenient. Does your MW do a pee stick every time you go? My office does. IF I start to spill sugars in my urine, I'll do a post-parandial. That's a finger prick that's done after a meal. It's much more accurate, which is why people with diabetes outside of pregnancy test this way.
I wouldn't stress over it. If your midwife doesn't feel it's necessary and she's keeping an eye on your urine anyway, you'll be covered.
You can google the glucose tolerance test to get some good links about the accuracy of it. Also remember that the most common complication of GD is a big baby (and possibly difficulty maintaining blood sugars/body temp after birth--both of which are easily treatable by nursing early and often), not fetal death as many people erroneously believe.

Its not really that necessary to do, not required. But you do got flags going on so Id take it just to be on the safe side. Its a little hassel but its better to be safe than sorry.
I had a fasle positive for mine (ended up passing the 3 hour one), which made me think heathier and started to eat better, which I felt better in general. Never did I imagine failing the test, since I passed with the boys. So you just never know. But I guess it was from recovering from an illness I had. So if your sick or recovering form something, don't take it.

Just follow your heart to what that is saying. The heart never lies.

I do it just to be on the safe side and I have no flags at all. It is not as bad as people make it out to be. You drink a beverage that tastes like a semi flat crush and get blood drawn one hour later. It certainly is not mandatory and if you feel you are truly not at risk, I do not see any reason you couldn't skip on it if you wanted.

I was not going to do the AFP test for the reason I am not at high risk and it really wouldn't change anything as far as my pregnancy goes, buit I had a standing order for it and did when I went in for some other tests and I was very glad I did because my u/s found some bilateral cysts on the babies brain, but with the results of my AFP and my genetic and DH genetic history it ruled out lotso fthings and I would have had to wait that extra week and all tht worry if I had not taken it prior to my u/s. I hope that made some sort of sense

This kinda goes with the Quad screenings. With the boys I didn't take it because of all the false positives and worries from that. But I did it this time (and passed) back in the day. Just because I didn't want to go through another surprise birth (Carson being born with a half missing limb). And I simply couldn't handle another surprise at birth that possible could have been prevented or taken care of right away (which in Carsons case couldn't anyway since it was congenital). Id like to be prepared and informed. So being prepared for something before hand is better than having it all be put on you after birth, which is really hard and sucks. But nothing is foolproof. Like the u/s not catching his arm.

I'd take it too since you have flags for it. I was 23 (almost 24) when I took it with Kylie and I just barely passed it. This time I have all 3 red flags:

1) I'm 27.
2) Kylie was 9 lbs 7 oz at birth.
3) My grandmother had type 2 diabetes.

I don't think they even give you an option on whether or not to take it here since they are pretty old-fashioned on some of their ideas. However, I am really worried I will fail the 1 hour this time either way, just a bad feeling. I just hope that if I do fail it that I will pass the 3 hour. My test is next Thurs. so I'll know in less than a week at least.
