If you have ever had Mastitis I know you are feeling for me. It's not fun. Needless to say, we had a ruff weekend. I had thought we had turned the corner with the whole breastfeeding thing. Off the nipple shield, no pumping and I *thought* we were nursing well. Not so. Friday passed with NO wet or dirty diapers. Nothing, a smear of poop but that's it. My mommy alarm starts going off and I call the provinces' RN Health line. She starts asking me simple questions about wet and dirty diapers when I realise I couldn't tell her when Mallory had a dirty diaper last. It had been that long! Long story short we ended up seeing an on call doctor late Friday night, she told me to feed her and offer a bottle. Been there, done that. Very discouraging. So we do that and Mallory gulps done 2-3oz AFTER 30 mins of BF.
I decide...enough is enough. This kid is starving! I don't care if she is gaining weight, this isn't working.
After a long phone chat with my BF I decide to throw in the towel. (she went through this too and I think sometimes we need someone to just say...you did great but it's time to stop. I needed to hear that...I felt so guilty)
So Saturday I find all these pea sized bumps under my breasts. Ohoh. Full blown Mastitis Sunday. The idiot doctor who sees me gives a 10 min lecture on why I should keep BF, I'm in tears and leave with no advise on how to treat Mastitis and wean at the same time. Jack A$$.
My mom is a RN and knows all the old school tricks. Last night I sat in the shower massage the lumps, then applied ice to the breasts and then did a binding. It was heaven having my girls nice and tight but it was a looooooong night.
Just for curiosity I tried Mallory at the breast again today. Nothing. So I guess as much as I quit BF, BF quit me too. So disappointing after 4 weeks of BF-ing hell.

To top my weekend off, Mallory has her days and night mixed up and was awake for 4 hours last night. I'm exhausted. I'm in unreal pain. I need a drink and some strong drugs!

oh noo, You poor thing! That sounds horrible, I've never btdt (knock on wood) but i've heard some horrendous storys. i hope your moms tricks work fast for you What a Stupid doctor!

I haven't had it but hear it is really horrible and painful. I have heard that the best treatment is to keep nursing but usually you get antibiotics to treat it too. I bet google could help! LOL I am sorry you have to quit but you have to do what is best. Can you pump at all? Sorry you are in pain and I hope it ends soon!

Btw, I too heard that you should keep bfing when you have it (along with thrush).

Did he at least give you antibiotics? I think that's also a necessity (along with bf) to help get rid of it. Hope you are feeling better!

I'm so sorry you had to wean and had someone give you a hard time about!!!

I had to supplement Magnus. He was gulping down 4ozs of EBM or fomula after ONE HOUR of bfing. It is discouraging. Can you keep pumping so baby can get the beneits?
