Re: heartburn question
The website is Drugs in Pregnancy : SafeFetus.com. I had the same problem with heartburn and nothing worked! It is miserable. My dr finally perscribed me prevacid, which is a cat. B and it has given me so much relief.

Re: heartburn question
Ugh, heartburn sucks! I'd rather have morning sickness! Ya, TUMS are no good. Gaviscon did wonders for me though...might be worth a try!

Re: heartburn question
How funny, I was just logging on to post this exact question!! I have something similar to heartburn, or related I guess, its a condition where basically the stomach acid comes up so much that my throat sort of closes off for days or weeks at a time. It constantly feels like I have a lump in my throat. It is so so so annoying and uncomfortable, and so far nothing has helped. It is also stress related, you know that feeling when you are about to cry, that throat feeling? Its that all the time. But the condition is known to cause stress cause obviously its so uncomfortable, you can't ignore it for a second so you think about it and think about it and stress and then it just gets worse. Today my throat is buring also cause some of the acid is starting to sneak up. Has anyone else had this? I never even had so much as regular mild heartburn with my other pregnancies so this is very strange! It started right away too.

Re: heartburn question
I agree with you, Nicole! With my dd, the heartburn was absolutely horrible. I think the morning sickness is easier to deal with and at least it subsided (at least for me) but the heartburn didn't.
As far as how many Tums are safe to take for a pregnant woman, well, I'm not an expert but I took more than 3 a day and have with this pregnancy as well and so far I've never done any damage to either of my babies and my dr. was never concerned either. Unfortunately Tums stopped working for me with my dd and I switched to Pepcid but that eventually stopped working too and my NP at that time thought she was so clever by telling me my only relief would be giving birth. I begged her for a prescription and she wouldn't give me one. I guess she thought I was just having run of the mill heartburn but that wasn't the case at all. It was making it to where I couldn't function and would be propped up on 4 pillows or would sleep sitting up and would still wake up gagging on bile (and that was one of my easier symptoms!) I have a wonderful OB this time who I am fairly sure would prescribe me something if it got to that point again with this one. I'm praying it doesn't though of course! Good luck! Heartburn sucks...especially during pregnancy!!

Re: heartburn question
Can you buy Zantac over the counter? I mentioned my heartburn at my last ob appointment and she said if tums stopped working (knock on wood, havent yet) to use the otc one, and I think it was Zantac... ask your doctor about it, Im sure they can recommend a safe otc one that will help with the relief.

Re: heartburn question
I have had bad heartburn with all of my pregnancies-- if you want relief without medication, slippery elm lozenges are available at most health/whole food stores and provide great relief-- you don't even have to worry about what category they fall under!
